The only way I know of to get a colony right now is to get them from local reefs looking to sell them. Any one else know of other ways to get them? retailers or anything? I know there divers den as well and you can get some nice 5-6" colonies there but I am still interested in other things too.

I wish, Nebraska, We have amazing LFS in my town and fish that are amazing. Like right now the LFS has a Hybrid Rabbit Fish that is a foxface lo x Magnificent that is one of like a couple known...however we dont have the best selection when it comes to colonies and when they do come in they are always crazy expensive and not that great looking.

Wild/maricultured colonies don't come in fully colored up, not even divers den. They are a gamble, but some people have good luck. If they are aussie then that's probably why they are charging a premium.

one of the benefits of living in Socal... we have garage stores that sell these mini colonies from $40-$70

My Acropora echinata colony will be here today. Got it for a great price (for an echinata) from the RC sponsor coral imports.

Are you looking for colonies for instant impact? I'd much prefer a large frag to a colony, as bigger pieces make for difficult placement and the color is tougher to retain. Where in Nebraska are you? I'm in Omaha and have sold off large colonies that have outgrown my system for very fair pricing.

one branch of any of those would be $50 - $70 here in NJ.
Aquarium care center, longbranch NJ. Sells maricultured corals like that for $45.

Online for colonies:

Unique corals.com
Divers den
Extreme corals.

I think it is worth getting a colony of: Strawberry shortcake, Secale, validia, cerealis, tenuis, echinata if you want to spend th money, as well as many more but I have had good success with those species.

Personally prefer divers den, they hold corals longer and are generally in better health, as well as divers den gives you a 2 week guarantee, or should I now call them Petco.

It really is quite difficult to find a wild colony that will hold color and look as good a commonly distributed frags. They are also hard to mount. They are also much more difficult to succeed and grow in a aquarium, can be done but harder. In general it is easier to grow maricultured corals and get a colorful one.

Hey I hit 1500 posts took me 11 yrs.

Thanks, is that the new reefs to reptiles? across from tropiquarium?

yup, I purchased about 20 maricultured/wild colonies to restart my tank in Jan. One caveat, he has very nutrient poor water where he keeps his acros they are very bleached, they really do come around quickly, about a month.

CAN YOU SPOT THE NEW CORAL. IT SHOULD NOT BE TOUGH<a href="http://s382.photobucket.com/user/eralff/media/new%20coral.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i382.photobucket.com/albums/oo268/eralff/new%20coral.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo new coral.jpg"/></a>

In the front is a divers den maricultured gomezi, had it since Jan, really is a great coral. Not a super quick grower, yet. Under 500 20k par I-phone picutre. A total new set of acros in January, after my flat worm incident.

geez, I would have assumed it was dead. everything else looks awesome though.

No it is now a month later and it is a pale brown, most likely in a month is should be some shade of blue. The lesson to be learned if you want to buy acros at that store, get them when they just come in. That one was there for about a month. I tested their water at home and kh was 9, phos 0.0 nitrate 0.0.

Looks like there is a good selection there per their facebook picture.<a href="http://s382.photobucket.com/user/eralff/media/aquarium.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i382.photobucket.com/albums/oo268/eralff/aquarium.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo aquarium.jpg"/></a>
