Hello, I just bought a r/o filter and was just wondering if anyone uses a TDS meter? If I had one what kind of reading should i get?
and it i buy one are the 20.00 one ok? thanks any info will help.

Not sure about the $20 one. I have a Hanna Instruments TDS meter. Should read zero on your RO/DI product water. Test it on your tap water and should read high in most areas, 100-300.

THey usually come with calibration fluid.

Depending upon what membrane you have in the RO, your "finished" water should read 2-10% of your input water. So If you have a 98% effecient membrane and tap TDS of 250, your post RO TDS should be 5. By monitoring this, you can tell when your membrane or other prefilters need to be changed.

If you have a DI stage, your post DI reading should be 0. Monitor this and know when to change your DI resin.

Basically, the only way to know if your RO/DI is working is to monitor the input and output TDS. So yes, they are very useful and most reefers use one (just another thing in the long list of things you didn't realize you'd need when you decide to start this hobby...).

A $20 meter would probably work, but who knows how long it would last? I think if you get up in the $50 range you can get a fairly reliable meter.

Yes, they are very handy to have. It allows you to check on the status of your RO membrane and if you add a DI unit, it will help out there as well.

If you are just using RO, then your reading should be about 5-10% of what your tap water reading is depending on the rejection rate of your membrane. If you add a DI unit, then you should get zero or very close to it.

I also use a Hanna Instruments TDS meter. My tap water test at 564. After my RO it's 11 then after DI it test at 0.

I check ALL my new RODI water with a TDS, that way I know exactly when to replace the filters. So far everything has been testing out at 0.00 TDS since I last replaced the filters.

Good thing to do if you want to keep pest algae away :)

Had an algae outbreak 6 months ago or so. Bought a Hanna TDS meter for 20 bucks off ebay, tested RO/DI water at 6TDS! Replaced DI resin and back to 0TDS. Algae went away in a few weeks as well. Definately a handy tool. Mine didn't come with calibration fluid though :(
