I was just wondering if anyone here used a UPS a uninterruptible power supply for a computer to run a powerhead or 2 in case your power shuts off and your not there to know about it I have one set up on a tank with a koralia hooked up to it so far no power outages but i have unplugged it from wall and do know it will run for atleast a hour I know its not the full system but it keeps water movement in the tank so that your amonia wont build up as quick just thought I would see if anyone else has used one of these for there tanks so far i only have one set up on one of my tanks i need to get more for the others

Mike,
Puncuation is your friend. I doubt anything bad will happen in an hour so I don't use them. After about 4 I begin to get concerned.

I use a battery back up on my vortech. The longest period I had to use it was almost 8 hours but it was still going strong.

An alternative for lengthy power outages is a teaspoon of 3% hydrogen peroxide per twenty gallons every 6 hours. This maintains the oxygen levels in the tank. An occasional swish with your hand is enough mixing. Generally, temperature control I've found to be bigger problem although a gallon ziplock bag full of hot water (~100 degrees F) will help a lot. All low tech and cheaper than UPS.

You don't generally need to make the first addition of peroxide until after the first 4 hours unless you have a large bioload.

I use a 1000 va UPS and it runs three Koralias (1-#2 and 2 - #1) for eight hours. I purchased the UPS used at ebay for $100 including shipping.

I think that the need for one depends on how often you have power outages and for how long.
