Does anyone use the Two part solution

I was thinking about making my own and adding it to my tank since my ALK is getting a little on the low side. I was just wanting to know where people get their Dow Flake from.

I think thats what i'm going to do is go through the website then search all over Saint Louis for it. Doing three 1/3 water changes a week is just not doing it.

I just did the estimate the shipping for that its like 17 dollars. Is that crazy? Is this really worth it?

Here's what my order was

------------------------------------------------------
1 x 4 gallon kit = $17.49
------------------------------------------------------
Sub-Total: $17.49
Table Rate (0.67lbs) (Best Way): $8.95
Total: $26.44

Yep, Lowes or HD for Driveway heat. Bag or jugs..... If you supplement only your ALK, I believe it will drive you Ca lower, hence the 2 in two part.

Randy, and our own beloved Doc Roy probably highly recommend dosing the same amount of both parts when you do dose. You just have to figure out what your usage rate is on a daily basis.

RHF also has a good starting dose amount on his recipe thread in the chemistry forum, based on what is in your tank.

Unless I am mistaken, the Dow Flake is for Ca, not ALK. For Alk they use baking soda as a supplement.

Driveway heat is the pelletized version. You use it the exact same way, just need about 20% less.

If you plan to order up some of the mag flake, you can order the dow flakes at the same time from harveysalt.com I had heard that they are changing the formulation on the dow flakes but I'm not sure what is going on since I use the pellet form also.(driveway heat)

You can find all of the recipe in the chemistry forum. With the peletized version, you just use 20% less.

Works awesome for me. But you will have to order the Mg from online (many vendors). (Or take a road trip to the NorthEast).
Just test your alk every several days after you start dosing, to monitor how much you need.
Very cool stuff and even with shipping is way cheaper than buying prepackaged stuff.

I must have been really tired last night but I thought the 12 gallon order I looked into was for a 12 gallon tank that would last for 2 years. I thought that was weird. Now I see its 12 gallons of the two part solution.

I'd be using both solutions

Just as a FYI : )

we use boxes from USPS that are one flat rate no matter how heavy they are . 32 cups of product or 3 kits fills the box to the top. This is perfect for stuff like this because it is so heavy. The cost is $8.95 a box. we checked to see how much it would be to ship 16-20 pounds in a normal box and it was $20-25 .

All in all , The shipping is pretty low for something as heavy as this .
