does chaeto remove phosphates

That's what I said.
Enough nutrient come from the water to maintain nuisance algae. If there is an excess from feeding, etc the problem will be greater.

What Randy is saying is basically that our salt mixes and RO/DI water do not contribute enough nitrogen and phosphorus to grow algae.

I've seen both chaeto AND caulerpa flat-out DIE in situtations of low/no nitrogen/phosphorus.

If you mix your water with regular tap water, you'll be putting in some amount of nitrogen and phosphorus, depending on how bad your water is.

Natural sea water will have some but again it will vary depending on where you harvested it.

Does anyone know how much you would actually had to collect to get 10 grams dry Chaeto?

It might be much more than expected...

You are probably right.... a LOT of "wet" would equal 10g of dry.

Personally when harvesting, I just pull out about half of my stock and give it away. I have no idea the dry weight..... but it works fine for me.

But it only comes if you use inappropriate water. Using RO/DI will not supply nutrients.

What are you using?

RO water. I said nothing about nutrents in RO water. You did.
Either you are adding them, such as via top off water or the fresh salt water,

OK, then you are not adding nutrients and your assertion that photosynthesis will provide everything that is needed is wrong. You might want to do some further reading on photosynthesis and what it does. :)

The BRS video was really good. I was on the fence but will definitely go with the fuge now. It seemed to work much better when a better quality light was used. great, more money!!!

You can get an outstanding light on Amazon for around a hundred bucks. Look up Mars hydro. Also search around this forum for others who use it.

I have the Mars Hydro. Crazy strong. Notice what Ryan says in the video at about 15 min in. When I put it in my sump, I also had a GHA bloom in the sump. I believe that starting the fuge on an existing tank that had nutrients has additional challenges as compared with starting a new tank. Just be aware.

Chaeto or Algae Scrubber , will NOT replace your maintenance, eliminate Detritus , help a lot, in my case i run B.B, lot of water low, good Protein Skimmer, to grow Chaeto , needs space, water flow, good (the right light) light, the only one dif. between chaeto and Algae Scrubber, Chaeto need 4x more space, easy to grow, Algae Scrubber less space , need extra pump (good pump , depend of the filter) NOT a pleasure to clean, if you rinse the frozen food , keep your tank clean, the Chaeto or Algae Scrubber do the rest, YES reduce Nitrate and PO4, in my case i got both "zero" but if Algae still grow, mean is NOT zero. My display tank is 300 Gal. refuge 90, swamp 60 Gal. to more 30 gal. garbage pal full of rocks. I run also DSB in my refuge also Bio-Pelets , i got the IN take for refuge from last stage of swamp, try to avoid the Detritus .

In last pic. i use Algae Scrubber to cure Rocks ( is NOT the Display) after 3 months PO4 is zero (tank is 220 gal.full of Pukani) NO hair algae on the rocks, i buy 660 lb. new Rocks, dose Bacteria and run Bio - Pellets.

The point of an algae scrubber is to grow the algae so they suck up the phosphate and nitrate as it forms in the water (once you get to zero). You can even get rid of your skimmer at that point. No need to rinse frozen foods or any of that if your ATS is working optimally. You also won't need chaeto.

Yes and NO, depend how many fish you have, 2 or 20 large, 5 frags or 50 colony's.
