Does lighting affect coralline algae color

Does the lighting used affect the color of the corraline algae grown in the tank? My corraline algae on my live rocks is typically green but I want to grow more of the purple corraline. All my water parameters are fine, but I'm using HO flourescent lighting. Should I switch to metal halide or T-5 lighting to get more purple corraline?

There are many different species of coralline algae, with all kinds of different colors and shapes. Green coralline will not turn purple and vice versa. You probably don't have true green coralline algae but normal green algae. Real green coralline needs very bright light which you don't have. To get purple algae, maintain your calcium at 420-460 - magnesium should be three times that of your calcium (say your calcium is 440, then you want 1320 magnesium) alkalinity 8-12 DKH. Your lighting is sufficient for the growth of purple coralline.

Just be patient and it'll grow. :)

Ive had a military shade of green coraline grow when I had low lighting. It went away once I upgraded my lights, and the purples and pinks started becoming dominant.

Right... my dark red likes high light too

My recent experience has been the opposite. I have mostly the drab army green coralline algae in the exposed areas (arrggh!). This cannot be scrubbed off the rocks(I've tried many times). In the nooks and crannies even underneath the rocks I have the purples and red coralline algae. I have high light, one overdiven SE 250 watt MH Radium, and two 32watt PC's on a 29gal Biocube.

My conditions are
Temp 79 - 81
SG 1.026
PH 7.9 8.1
Alk 9 -10
Mg 1400
Cal 380 - 420

In another 15 gal. quarantine tank I have non HO t5 actinic and 10000k daylight. this 15 gallon tank has bright reds and purple coralline on top of the rock but nothing underneath the rocks.

Any help on how to get rid of the Green and promote the pink/red/purple would be appreciated.

Glen

I have dark purple growing under my overhangs in my mh lit tank. Pink is on the glass. some light purple on top of the rocks.
