Kh around 11.5 with low nutrient can cause corals to go brown.I learnt the hard way, some of your coral look exactly like mine did.I was lucky i only lost two.Lowered my Kh back to 8-9 and things gained colour within two weeks.

You should be fine at that level. I've been over 400 at times with out issue. Just don't bring it up too fast or you could experience burnt tips. It will come down on its own in time. Are you dosing K+?

i'm not sure how corals would react to 458 ppm of K+.

But if you tested with a Red Sea Pro kit i would try and test with another brand of kit. i tested my tank with one and do not trust the results, my tank also read 458ppm and i haven't dosed any K+.

i use NSW, so i tested a sample of fresh NSW with the same kit and it also tested very high at 440ppm+

i was hoping the Red Sea kit would easier to read than the others, which it is, but it's useless if it is inaccurate.

I am curious myself on the accuracy of the Red Sea kits as I have seen mixed reviews so far.

Hi there,
The best way to check is with a standard solution.
You can make it by dissolving your favorite salt at a known salinity.
Most big salt companies will provide you with the data of the levels of key elements, at a certain salinity.
I encourage all of you to test new salt mixes at least once a bucket.
Red Sea Coral Pro- at salinity of 35 ppt will have 390-410 ppm of Potassium.
I hope I helped.
Feel free to ask me on Red-Sea's Forum.
All the Best,
Aviad.
