I myself just had a big ordeal with salinity and temp. My temp probe was reading off by 5 degrees and my brand-new bottle of salinity calibration solution was bad.

the problem with the frag in the picture is the white dead looking areas around the base. there are no polyps left in those area's. whereas there previously were.
there's coraline on the rocks, just not a lot. I have only had the t5's over the tank for the six week period that the frags have been in the tank. I actually have to scrape the coralline of the back glass weekly. and It is growing very well in my fuge.
Most coral colors have improved since being in the DT. they were pretty drab when I purchased them. some that were brightly colored have browned slighty. I haven't stressed over color too much as I know my lighting is probaly slightly underpowered right now. I have been paying more attention to polyp extension and growth as indications of health, I figure color will improve more after everything settles in and matures. and so far the polyp extension and growth has been amazing in the display tank. the crazy part is it will encrust, then recede on many pieces.

Like I previously mentioned, the bulk of the problem has been in my frag tank. regretfully I just came home to find another victim. a strawberry shortcake frag that has rtn'd since last night.
 
Logzor, you got me thinking when you said bad calibration solution. I just purchased some a few months ago. I always calibrated with rodi before. I double checked tonight. First i calibrated refractomer with solution and checked both tanks. Both read exactly 1.026.
Then i calibrated with rodi, rechecked both tanks and got 1.027 1/2! Which do i believe? Do you think that would be high enough to stress corals? Salinty runs that high on SOME reefs if im not mistaken.
 
I think the fluid is right, even if it isn't when my salinity creeped up too high I didn't see any ill effects until I was up around 1.030+. If it makes you feel better you can lower it to 1.025 (based on the calibration fluid) and still be safe.
 
I have been having some stn of my own after the tank being very healthy for 3 years with sps. One similarity is my ro reading 0 on the inline and .02 with the handheld, also I have been wondering if chemical warfare from some of my lps would cause issue with sps, I started running carbon which I think is helping. I also think I may have overdosed gfo and have started feeding the tank more. I might today see if I can find polyfilter.

Not trying to hyjack or anything just looking for similarities. Do you test for mag?
