Does too little lighting promote algae?

I've read several times now today that too little lighting can produce certain strains of algae especially brown algae. I've always restricted my lighting to about 6 hours a day. Does this statement have any truth to it? I am battling algae at the moment, but I never considered too little lighting could be an issue. Can anyone provide any experience on this topic? I always assumed algae growth meant too much excess nutrients.

Algae need light and nutrients. Matter of fact, a great way to knock it back is to go dark for 2 to 3 days. Turn the lights off and drape some towels over it. No need to seal everything up or worry about a little light getting in when you feed (lightly!) During that time.

I've never heard that idea expressed and I believe it to be wrong. But that's an opinion, not a statement of fact!

Some people do lights out totally for 3 days to reduce algae. I've done just blue leds for a week and got rid of algae and still had coral s and anemones open up and look normal. And under the blue leds got wonderful color fluorescence as a by product!
