Does your overflow slurp/gulp too?

I just set up a new refugium with a overflow and every once in a while it makes a gulping noise. It never loses suction or stops flowing. I just want to know if this is normal or is something else going on? Thanks in advance for any help.

Yes mine does every once and awhile, as long as it keeps syphon and the flow is steady and your overflow is keeping up with your return pump you are fine.

It seems ok so far only been running for not even a week yet. How long has yours done it for. Thanks

So it probably fine then, huh? I guess im just paranoid about it because its new. Thanks for the feed back guys.

the sound is caused by a pressure gradient that is created by the water flowing into an area without a relief of air to equalize the pressures.

if the sound is annoying you can fix it by threading soem thin vinyl tubing through the overflow tubing. you have to play with the distance to find the spot where the air can be adequately "sucked in." this should eliminate the sound.

Wow very cool. Are yo talking about like 1/4" tubing? Does it matter thatmy inlet hose goes into the water, or should the water fall into the water?

my inlet hose goes into the water too, and thats what causes the slurping from above or at least makes it worse. If the hose is above the water line in the sump, then ait can travel in the opposite direction of water and the pressures would remain equal, but that means hearing the sound of of water plop into the sump (unless you get a nice drip plate)

... thats why I think the easier solution is threating the tubing. 1/4 inch may even be more than you need. and when you thread it, make sure it does NOT reach the bottom. the ideal end point is different for every setup so just play with it. you may need only 6 inches of tubing just at the top, or more, reaching close (but never into) the sump.

hope that helps, let me know how it works out
