Dog vs live rock

As soon as I added live rock, sand and water to my tank, every time I go up to mess with the tank my mini schnauzer starts a low growl/whimper. No fish, inverts or coral yet. Can anyone explain this? He did nothing when I had nothing in there.

I dunno to be honest. Maybe he hears something you can't hear. You know dogs have very good hearing and hear things even most humans can't hear.

He sees large unusual shapes which can appear to be non moving or crouching creatures. Plus he's a schnauzer...that's really all the explanation needed. ;)

Pistol shrimp? Also, how much were you messing with the tank before and after? He could just be jealous of it getting all of the attention.

I agree that it could be jealousy. My shepherd mix will nudge my cellphone out of my hand and bark if I'm not paying her enough attention.

Yeah I think he senses life in the tank and knows he is not the center of attention now. It's weird with no fish or inverts in the tank yet

Mine currently gets upset and barks for attention when I work on my plywood turtle tank. He just is upset that I'm up and doing something but not paying attention to him.

He's a miniature Schnauzer. That's all you needed to say :) Had three of them in my life at some point, and they're all a little nuts...
