I recently posted some information about an interesting coral that I have stumbled across recently. It is a member of the Galaxea genus and is called Galaxea acrhelia.

   http://reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=948814

General Description:
Galaxea acrhelia is an LPS coral. It has a branched form and polyps that look sort of like sun coral polyps, except are only about 1/4 inch or so across. The coral is a modest brown color. However, I did see some green tints that I am hoping will come out more after a while.

Care and Feeding
This coral will appreciate moderate to high lighting, though may do well under lower lighting as well. And while it is zooxanthallate, this coral should be fed quality frozen foods on a regular basis. Target feeding is always appropriate and will insure the food is actually getting to the coral, and not just feeding your (and my) foot long bristleworms.

First Generation Frags
I should be able to get at least 5 frags out of this coral, maybe more. These frags will be available at the meeting this Saturday, so show up if you want one.

For those that are not aware, these corals are not readily often available in the hobby as "no one wants to bag and ship corals with sharp spines on them, or they lose their water in shipping and everyone loses money." (ref) Consequently, I have some specific requests to be made pertaining the first generation of frags of this coral to go out to the club.

I would like these frags to go to folks who:
  1. Are currently keeping LPS corals VERY successfully.
  2. Are feeding their LPS corals frozen preparations (mysis, plankton, ENRICHED brine, etc).
  3. Are actively keeping Calcium & Alkalinity (and preferably Magnesium) levels up so that corals CAN grow properly.
  4. Are seeing serious growth from their LPS corals
And if you fit these qualifications and are also keeping Galaxea, then you get even more bonus points. :D

I am not trying to be mean or anal or anything. I just want to see this coral really take off in our donor program.

Picture, at last:

And a source of more info on the coral, a little at least.

Sign up below if you are interested... Note that signing up may not guarantee a Generation 1 frag of this coral. Again, preference will be given to those most likely to suceed with this coral. (Sorry!)

Oh, I thought that you bought it from them, captbunzo, and then fragged it out. I know that the Turbinaria and Zoanthids will definitely be from them.

I had a very large galaxia. It was an awesome piece but it would sting and kill corals around it. Just an FYI for the donors.

This is a different Galaxea than what you normally find at the LFS. This one can and will produce sweeper tentacles, but they are much smaller. The other Galaxea can throw out 12+" sweeper tentacles. But, still, 6" sweepers are nothing to laugh about.

---update-----

My Galaxea frag is doing well, open nicely and displaying its polyps. It is still a drab brown color, but nice all the same.

As Paul Thompson said, this is truly rare coral. It is highly unlikely you will se another one of these for sale anywhere. In that regard we have been entrusted with a great responsibility. Through COMAS this soral may begin to florish and get passed around. Indeed, this is my hope for all of the frag/donor corals.

Please take time to note how your frag is doing for you and lets get some pictures of this coral in our tanks and document its position and tank conditions.

Mine is directly under 250W MH (XM 20K) at about 8 inches depth. It has polyps open and looks, so far, healthy.

Paul.

My polyps have not opened up, so I'll move it closer to the light tonight. If it doesn't open up at all tomorrow, I suggest that someone else take it. I would rather it do well with someone else, than flounder with me.
