Donovan's Nitrate Destroyer

So my flex PVC caps were a failure, and I replaced the inlet side with a regular glued PVC cap and added some super glue to the right side. Everything is holding tight. 3 days in, so far so good!

The bulkhead didn't seal to the round flexcap well and was leaking out around there.

I haven't measured my NO3 yet but my wife, who knows nothing about this, said to me today the sand is cleaner than it's ever been before and the rocks look great. There's a definite lightening of the algae I have growing in there as well. So far, huge success

Also, you weren't kidding when you said you can see the nitrogen bubbling out. I'm sitting here watching it now and I get a pretty good flow of little bubbles, and every once in a while I'll get like an inch long bubble pop out and make its way down the tube. I've leak checked the heck out of this thing so it's got to be coming from within

I have completed my unit and it is 39" tall and 4" in diameter, Here are the pictures of the media I have used for this unit since it is very porus and it has plenty of surface area for bacteria to grow. I seeding 5 ml of vinegar and startup carbon dose, Once bacteria population is established I will dosing vinegar every once in a while to feed bacteria. I will post results and progress of maturity of my reactor, I will post results and readings of nitrate as well.

You can set a higher flow as it is quite tall. I would say maybe 8 - 10% of total volume of water per hour. Seed it with bacteria first, set lowest flow and monitor the output.

Noce build, especially the removable top. Please update us in 5 days time :D

yes it is diy dosing pump built out of scrap Jebao dosing pump controller, Just an FYI 4 pump jebao dosing pump actually have connections for 6 pump heads but they give us only 4, When i opened the box to take the controller out I saw 2 ports were blank. So i bought pumps and made box out of wood and made 6 heads dosing pump which works fine,

I will build a dosing pump and connect to my Arduino when I have the time. It will help a lot with auto dosing. Thanks ravi, looking forward to hear a success story from you :D

Sure buddy, I always think about using Arduino for my dosing pump build but I am not good with programming, I will follow your build when you start and hop to learn from your build, I know Arduino makes plenty of hardware that can be used in our hobby but I lack a little on how these work or how to make them work..

Since I had a jebao 4 dosing pump and two spare pump heads, can you give us ,some more information,on the modification you have done to the jebao 4 dosing? I can see at the menu, that can control two more pump heads but i am afraid to open it, without having any "guidance". It will benefits many of us, since the carbon dosing in don denitrator, will be more easy with a dosing pump, instead by hand, as I am currently doing! I am away this week and have stopped carbon dosing without wanting to!

There is no modification to the software all you have to buy is 12v dosing pumps with 5000 rmp and connect the pumps to the connectors that are free of use, You can buy the connector from Rabid Led, They sell connectors to connect their solderless led's it will fit the connector on the board. Below is the link to my thread on Manhattanreefs with pictures, I hope this helps, Now i have dosing pump with 6 pumps.

I forget how long now I've been using this setup, maybe two weeks or so, but the color on my Salifert test has gone from something > 50, to something < 50. So hard to read this kit top down, next time I'm going with a different manufacturer. But a definite improvement! Corals look great. Really do. Thank you again for sharing.

2nd week with slight drop of no3 is just about right. Major drop happens on 3rd week in mine, achieved 5ppm on 4th week. After that close to zero afterwards. I'm keeping 1 - 2 ppm at this moment. Just added 6 fishes (skunk nemo, powder brown tang, clown tang, yellow tail goby, dragon wrasse, blue lips tang) two weeks ago. Not yet tested no3 since the addition.

This is awesome to hear success stories, I am out of town and returning Thursday and Hopefully my reactor has something positive, I will test water Sunday form output of the reactor and see what are the readings,
