Don's 150 gallon "my wife is going to kill me" glass box of joy

Got home last night and blasted the rocks trying to clean off the algae. Still not sure of the source. Doing a 25 gallon water change this weekend and just placed a order with www.reefcleaners.org for some back up. Moved the power heads around trying to get more flow in the tank also. Will look at getting another power head this weekend as well. Hope to have progress by next week.

Here is a photo of the algae that I am fighting. I ordered a package from www.reefcleaners.org that should be here this week to help fight it. I will have to get my phosphates checked by LFS as I do not have a test kit for that. I moved the rocks and pumps around to get more flow through out the tank as well. Next step is a GFO and Phosban reator with a UV sterilizer. I have never ran a reactor or sterilizer with any of my past tanks so I am a little on the fence with the must have on those.

Got my reef cleaners package yesterday and everything is now in the tank. If you have not used www.reefcleaners.org before I would highly recommend them. Now my CUC has some reinforcements to get the job done. Another water change this weekend and everything should be doing fine.

I was digging through some of my old photos and came across these photos of my old JBJ. This tank was so easy to take care of and turned out great. It was a struggle in the beginning, but with not media or skimmer ever used it was a great setup. Just bi weekly water changes 20 to 25%.

Here is a current Full Tank Shot. Staying to the basics and trying to keep it as simple and easy to take care of as possible. I am starting to wonder if the fine sand has a huge amount of silica in it. I have diatoms all over the sand bed, but not really anywhere else. Almost two months in now and the diatoms have stayed about the same. This is the sand that came with the setup. No livestock in the old system for over a year. Starting to wonder if I might need to start replacing the sand over time. Other then that all is well. Running a Skimmer and sock in the sump with rock being the main filter.

Here are a few close ups of the coral. The growth is pretty good with it only being 2 months old. I only have by phone for the photos and they do no justice for the colors you see with your eyes. I might have to in vest in a camera moving forward. There is a lot more coral in the tank then you can see from the photos.

Current FTS.

Update:
I have added a little more sand to the main display and started my fuge. I ordered some new circulation pumps that should be in today to increase the flow in the tank. The ones I ordered and hydor knock offs that I got on Amazon. The pumps are rates at 3100GPH of flow each. I ordered two of them to see if it makes a difference over the 4 pumps I am running now. For 49 bucks shipped I am thinking they will make a good back up pump if nothing else.

Got the new power heads in and what a difference in flow! I think between the two there is 6200GPH being pushed through them.

I added some more sand to the display last week to help offset the diatom out break with the fine sand. The new sand seems to have worked on the diatoms. I know it seems backwards from what makes logical sense, but the fine sand seemed to be like rocket fuel to the diatoms in the light. the new sand has blocked the light from reaching the fine sand and now the diatoms are gone. No other updates. The only thing added in the last two weeks was a toad stool frag that is doing good. I will leave with a current FTS after the new power heads and one my wife took we me napping on the couch with my youngest son next to the tank. Hope everyone has a great weekend and happy reefing.

Next time you buy pumps try the jabao wavemakers. They are very reasonable for the functionality they have. People say they are not good but I have had no issues and have spares if I needed to change one out.
