Monday Biocube 8 setup: Used rocks/water and sand from established 100g

Wednesday (2) perculas: LFS said they were "wildcaught"

Thursday anemone: green/brown LTA very healthy

Friday: Female/Big clown fish hosting anemone

This was an awesome week, I have had two ocellaris B&W clowns for 18 months and I have tried several anemones and they will not host anything. So I decided to setup a clown/ anemone tank. Finally after a year and a half I have clowns hosting an anemone. One problem is that the big clown will not let the small clown in the anemone, I am thinking that once they fall in love they will share the bedroom.:smokin:

Canopy being built as I type with 70w MH, and waterchanges will be done every sunday at 10%

Whats the difference adding two clowns and anemone into my 100g vs. adding them to my 8g witht he same exact water/rocks/sand? I know that bioload is a tad heavy but 10-15% water changes weekly I believe I will be A ok. If it does get to much for the nano I can move them easily. I was just kiiding about people being jealous....

Those nems get big man. You're going to have to split it yourself if you feed it.

If you feed them well they grow really fast. Congratulations on the clowns hosting.

i didnt mention the overload of the livestock, i was saying you are moving a little fast. set tank up monday fully stocked by friday. i dont think anyone should add an anemone to a tank less than 6 months old.

now the overstocking, i wouldnt put 3 clowns in a 30 gallon tank. do you feel bad about having those fish in such a small space?

I'd say that 2 clowns are fine in an 8g since they are not a 'cruising' fish and as long as you keep pristine water quality. I'd hate to see that LTA in there in a few months though, there'll be no room for anything else, not even the clowns!!

The clowns won't go more than a FT from their anenome if they don't have to.

They are much more mobile when they aren't hosting.

i think he has 3 clowns in there. 2 on tuesday and one later (female). clowns are territorial and that may cause problems. i just think that 8 gallons is a pretty small tank. i felt bad as a kid putting medium sized goldfish in a 10 gallon.

a 10% water change is less than 1 gallon

not tryin to be a downer, but my GBTA went from about 3" diameter, to 7" diameter in less than 2 months. (I feed all my stuff a lot) Hope it works, but 8 gallons...
maybe you could hook up a sump, IDK

I have 2 nems with clowns a-hostin, so I'll TRY not to be TOO jealous LOL

like you said tho, you always have the 100g to fall back on, which is nice

To me the tank is really not brand new what is the difference between adding the clowns to the 100g vs. the 8g everything in the 8g has been established for 18 months (the same as the 100g)....? Also about the LTA getting big if it does get too big I will move the trio into a bigger tank, not a big fan of splitting anemones. Also my clowns in my 100g do not move more than 10 inches of where they hover at so the size thing doesn't really worry me. Its not like I added a tang/angel. But yes I am fully ready to upgrade tanks for them when needed.

Sounds okay to me, I'd get that 70w MH set up as quickly as possible. Once those nems start bleaching, you've got trouble. Also, I'd only plan to have that setup for a couple of months.

but they still moved 10" away from the anemone, and now they cant move 1" away. the tank is probably only 10" x 10".

i guess my gold/maroon clown is spoiled. he has 2 nems on opposite ends of a 75 and swims back and forth and enjoys both of them.

I do agree with you downhillbiker, bigger is ALWAYS better when it comes to swimming room, but clowns are a hardy fish and don't seem to be bothered by a cramped space.

That is cool that your maroon goes from anemone to anemone. What I meant by 10" is that I could put a 10" x 10" box around my B&W clowns and they wouldn't even notice. I can't wait to get home and check out if the other clown has tarted to host.....:rollface: And again I can go bigger when needed

I see this lasting a couple of months at most. LTAs, can/will grow very fast when they are smaller. Mine 3" one doubled in size in less then a month. And as it gets larger, the more waste it is going to produce.

Congrats! I don't think the 8g is too small for 2 clowns... the like very little space (at least most do) and percs are much smaller than maroon's get. As for the LTA - as long as you're ready to one day move it to a bigger home as it grows - I don't see a problem with it at all. The LTA will eventually outgrow the 8g - so it might not have been the BEST nem to choose - but it will be beautiful and I think species only tanks where besides the live rock - all you have is the anemone and the fish will look cool! Oh - Ok - well Toddrex has more experience with me on LTA's - so I bow to him - maybe a BTA would be better in that tank once you move the LTA to your 100g?

I have a 28 gallon JBJ HQI tank that houses a pair of maroon clowns and a BTA colony. They get so huge the tank looks like one giant anemone during the day. There wouldn't be any room for water if they were in an 8 gallon tank.

And actually, I think any hosting anemone will get too big for an 8 gallon. Right before I sold my last BTA off, it was 15"+, and was splitting on a regular basis.
