donut brain..

so ive had a donut brain in my tank for about a year and a half and just recently after i switched to my 75gal from my 55 and changed my mh bulbs, the flesh on it started to lose color...at first it was sitting on the sand in my tank but i thought that maybe it wasnt getting enough light and so i moved it about half way up and its still looking like its losing color...any suggestions??

It's most likely getting too much light. Moving it up would only worsen the problem. Did you just up and replace the bulb without acclimating your corals to the new light intensity?

I would move it to a shaded area lower in the tank for the time being. I'm sure someone more experienced with that type of coral will chime in though...

Do you dose Iodine? It should prove useful. If you can follow a daily regimen that would be best. Follow the instructions and don't overdose.

Iodine is not well understood, and most evidence of its benefits are anecdotal. One school of thought is that Iodine neutralizes excess oxygen in coral tissues during times of high lighting and excess photosynthesis. The excess oxygen can cause damage. Iodine also has anti-bacterial properties and can help stave off infections. Bad news (not so bad really) is that its natural concentration is in parts per billion and very hard to accurately measure with anything you or I could afford. Iodine is rapidly depleted in the aquarium and should be dosed regularly at the menaufacturers suggested rate. If you overdose, you can get some algae bloom. I have a crocea clam that sustained some pretty massive mantle holes and it healed itself. The only thing I did was dose Iodine once a day rather than twice a week.

I do not dose iodine and it is not recommended by many . It is an oxidant and can be toxic to many invertebrates. If you do regular water changes ,your salt mix should provide adequate iodine

The link is to an article from the Advanced Aquarist magazine on Iodine in Reef Aquaria. Be careful with it if you do decide to dose it.

yeah like i said im going to read about it first before i make my decision...because im not sure i need to dose it but i wanted to get the pros and cons of it before even considering doing anything...thanks for the link!

I don't know a lot about the inner works on iodine or it's effects on the chemical structure in my water system, but from experience I can tell you it definitely helped my green brain recover from bleaching. I was able to tell a night and day difference when I dosed iodine compared to when I didn't. I don't dose it now, as there's no way for me to measure it's concentration, but my brain was in trouble so I tried 1/2 the recommended dosage, and it worked. i have to believe what I see with my own eyes :)
