Why is it a bad idea? I haven't seen anything bad about them. Or am I just missing it?

I was actually looking at the possibility of putting it on the timer with my lights. to give it a rest at night. But that is good info to have.

In short, it will not provide enough cooling to be worth using on anything larger than about a 20g system.

Ok thanks for the info. However if someone has one they no longer want I will be interested in buying it to try it out.

A timer based setup with a res full of water with lots and lots of coiled poly tubing running through it in an old half size or dorm sized freezer would probably work better than a fridge. But you would need to pressure and leak test the poly tubing to make sure you didn't end up with contamination.
If the issue of heat is because it's getting warmer, consider running your lights on reverse photoperiod for the summer. When my tank was in the top of a house I had to do that or I'd bake. Then in the winter back on daytime cycle.
