Doser Malfunction

Doser malfunction and I dosed about 1 liter of NO3:PO4-X into my 65 gallon reef tank yesterday. Everybody stressed and starting to lose specimens. Should I continue dosing the 6 mls per day, or should I stop and for how long? Doing 10% water changes every couple of hours. No quarantine tank. Any suggestions?

I have stopped dosing. Confused about the wet skimmer suggestion. I have a large skimmer in my sump and it is pumping out tons of effluent each day. Are there wet skimmers and dry skimmers?

Hello Kroghs,

I'm terribly sorry to hear about your aquarium. For the wet skim, adjust your protein skimmer so that you have to empty the cup frequently (at least daily), then top off your aquarium with clean saltwater.

If your protein skimmer is foaming continuously, then empty the cup several times a day and continue topping off with new clean saltwater until the reaction from your skimmer calms down.

Keep doing your water changes, and run some carbon to help against the chemical warfare that is happening from your corals. Stop dosing completely, as you already have, until your aquarium recovers.

Thanks and that is what I have been doing with the skimmer, it has been going crazy for the past few days and I empty it often. When you say stop dosing please be more specific. I was dosing NO:POX, Reef Energy and have a calcium reactor. My DKH was 14 so I turned off the CO2 and still running the calcium reactor. My nitrates and phosphates are near zero so Avaid at Red Sea recommends to start dosing NO:POX again, what do you think? Still waiting to hear from Avaid about when to resume the Reef Energy A&B, your thoughts? I do a 10% water change daily for about another two weeks. Water is clearing up slowly and there is slime on the glass and power heads. Any suggestions would be very much appreciated! Feeding my fish small amounts every other day and there appetite is back. This has been a miserable two weeks tying to save my beautiful reef tank that so much work and effort has been put into. Thanks for listening!

It is great to hear that your water is slowly clearing up and that your fish are eating again.

I would suggest to stop dosing NoPox until your aquarium recovers, and especially after your skimmer has calmed down. Once your aquarium is back to normal, then you may start up NoPox again.

With that said, Aviad is the expert and we know him very well. If he is suggesting that it is safe to start dosing NoPox again, then it would be safe to do so. You may even cut the dosage in half to see how your system responds.

As for the Reef Energy A & B, generally you want to dose Reef Energy once your nitrates and phosphates are near zero. However, let's wait and see what Aviad suggests for your system.

I communicated Aviad and your are exactly right. He stated it was okay to start dosing NO:POX in smaller doses and I can also start the Energy A & B again. What a tough, sad lesson to learn the hard way. Thanks for your help, very much appreciated.
