Dosing Nitrate

I've read somewhere that some people dose nitrate in order to get better colors on some of their sps corals. I don't have any nitrates according to several test kits. I've tried stepping up my feedings, all that did was increase phosphates more, without an effect on nitrate. My monti caps especially are very pale and this lack of nutrients has led to stunted growth. I was wondering if anybody had any experience with dosing nitrate?
