i am fairly sure this has been touchedon in a few threads, but for the last 3 or 4 days i have not been able to use the search function, and i have been through quite s few pages of threads.

after 18 long months i am 90% ready to add water to my 1200 litre broodstock system.

i was wondering if anyone who is breeding or attempting to breed orchid dottybacks, royal grammas or black caps could tell me the size tank they have them in (prefer actual dimensions as 20 long or 18 high meens nothing to me) and what you have in the tank with them.

A little bit OT but you don't need to use RC's search to search the forums,,, use this:

I have mine in 40 gal. tanks 36 X 20X12 inches.

In my tanks I have 1'1/2 inch pvc with a cap at one end for the orchids, for the gramma I have a block with a 1 1/2" hole on it.

thanks ed, much appreciated. would you think that size would also be ok for black caps?

Hey Ed, think I can pair up a pair of grammas in my 24 cube (the one where everything breeds from the GBGs to the 3 types of cardinals etc...)??

Seriously, I've been thinking about it..the tank needs more COLOR!

FWIW my orchids spawn like clockwork in a 20H (24" x 12" x 16"h) which they share with a pair of ocellaris. Previously I had a pair that spawned regularly in a 10 (20" x 10.5" x 12"h).

HMM David, maybe I just need to break down and buy the next 2 small grammas I come across (granted, what I REALLY want are Starki Damsels...I still drool over them but somehow, don't think a breeding pair will work so well in the cardinalfish tank!)

How aggressive are grammas when spawning?

I have treid to get a pair of G. melacara going about 4 times, every time I lose one or both of them in short order. Personally I don't care much for G. loreto so I never tried them, but they get quite a bit larger than I think most people realize. Oh I lie, I did add 4 small ones to my 125 but I'm pretty sure the drums ate them :eek1:

I have seen some real monsters in older established tanks. My guess would be 20 gallons minimum just to keep them and maybe larger for spawning. I have a friend with a 240 sps reef and he has a trio in there. The male is not fussy, he switches back and forth spawning regularly with both females. Lucky bastard.

You can pair both species in a 10 gal. 20 gal. it really does not matter much, the only problem is aggression, the male dotty ussualy keeps the female in the top corner of the tank, or hidden in the rocks. Although in rare occassions they share the den.

Grammas and black caps are the same story, unless you want to have them locked mouth to mouth all the time give them space.
I have 6 pairs of loretos, I place a rock in each corner, one for each, and the den in the middle. All are alive and well.

I am re-reading Moe's dottyback book...Are we able to raise orchids now without wild plankton? What do you, who raise them, feed them?
