Dottybacks

Hi, I was wondering if before a dottyback lays eggs her stomach gets bloated. I also notice that its stomach has like black egg looking objects. Is this normal? My cameras broken and im getting it fixed so pics are not available at this time . One is yellow with the pink stripe while the bloated one is an orchid dottyback:eek2:

First, you should use the edit function to delete the other two of these that you have posted.

What is the fishs behavior ? Courting with the other ?

Swollen would describe an abdomen filled with eggs, bloated would indicate the whole abdomen and trunk distended. Gas from roted eggs would do it as well as other causes.

How long has it looked like this? As you have two separate species its unlikely to have a breeding which would alleviate the swollenness if its eggs.

These are the photos showing my female orchid dottyback with swollen abdomen. She spawned the following day.

Thanks for the feedback...
It resembles your pregnant one. Now would that make him the boy or the girl.. The purple is a bit smaller than my redcap..:smokin:

They are spawning every 6 days. Yes, I am raising them. I get around 10% survival from hatch to 3 cm juveniles, when I am lucky.

Bandeng wouldnt the rotted eggs kill her or does she somehow release them into the tank on her own. I ask because shes been like this over a week already...

The male occupy a den. Invite the female to spawn (Photo 1). The male nuzzle the female and vibrate his body to urge (?) the female to release the eggs. The female start to release the eggs (Photo 3). During this spawning ritual, the male frequently get out of his den to check surroundings (Photo 4). Here is an egg ball (Photo 5) after one to two hours of the ritual. The eggs hatch out after several days of care by the male.

Could this be an answer to your question?

I have a 150L community tank with 5 Orchid dottybacks, 2 Fales crown anemonefish, 1 Yellow head jawfish, and 1 Skunk shrimp. The dottybacks mature and carry gravid gonads but never spawned. They seem to be doing fine and grow much bigger than the spawning one of the same brood in the other tank.

Bandering, kudo's on the photo(s) & description, real book quality stuff. :D Excellent work. I never even noticed the male leaving the den during egg laying, I tend to stay away from the tank as soon as I notice both are in the den.

So if I understand right the 5 in 150L are siblings and grew out together? Can you see any social structure such as one dominant male & all others female, or does it not shake out like that? How old are they anyway? No fighting? This is just another example of traditional assumptions proven wrong, go tell your lfs you want to keep 5 fridmani in a 40 gallon tank and they will have you commited  Congrats !!

Thank you for your comments. The composition of the dottybacks in the 150L tank is as follows. There are four 2nd generations bred here and one wild. Among the four, two are females and bigger than others. The other two seem also to be female and are younger and malformed so that could not be accepted by lfs. The wild one seems to be a male introduced hoping to avoid inbreeding. I must check my log book to tell their exact age. But they are difinitely older than five months. My dottyback pairs in other tanks (10 gallon) took around 16 weeks from their hatch before their first spawning. There clearly is pecking order in the 150L tank where the biggest female dominates and followed by the second biggest (female). The third seat is occupied by the male. The most dominant of all, however, is a pair of the false clownfish.

oh its that simple? i thought there was an aggression issue. thank you for info.

i would imagin there personalities are pretty interesting when there is a pair.

the male will keep her far from the den, and will chase her and beat her up constantly, they need at least 30 gal. to pair up for her to get away, I made some pairs 4 weeks ago, six of them, half from ORA half from my stock, one if the females is gravid already.

Have your LFS order some from ORA they come in at the perfect age.Or order some from Makin waves, a sponsor here, he has my stock.

Raising the larvae thats another story...
