Double ended MH vs single ended?

Can anyone eplain/comment on benefits of a double ended metal halide vs a single ended MH? I recently won a 150 watt double ended MH in a raffle at reef-a-palooza. The light is made by aquaticlife & is the 150 watt 12" pendant R7S. Thanks.

Single ended have a bit better selection as far as bulbs go.

I personally use Double Ended Halides. Reason being my favorite bulb is the DE Phoenix 14k.

Other than personal preference there isn't anything huge that would have you prefer 1 set over over another IMO.

Also, the DE bulbs must have an additional glass shield to block UV. SE bulb have this built into the envelope.

I did not know that about the bulbs nor had I even thought about that. Do you think that could just be due to de's being a newer technology? My bulb is brand new but once it comes time to replace I will look into the phoenix. I did however know about the uv filtration issue. The reflector comes with a piece of glass though so I don't really see that as an issue. I have also read a few articles on the de's light pattern being more focused this increasing the intensity significantly so that it is comparable to a higher wattage single ended MH. Has anyone else heard anything about that?
