Double or triple clown fish ?

Just bought a pair of naked clowns about 2 days ago, I was wondering if I can add a snow flake clown without a problem?

I currently do not have an anemone and figured since they are a. Ocellaris they wouldnt fight. I wanted to know from the experts before I purchase anything.

2 clowns in a system would pair up.

after they have paired up, you can add another pair, given you have another host in your tank [corals/anemone]

but adding 3rd clown fish in now, would cause 2 of them to pair up and kill hte 3rd wheel.

many would disagree with my statement above, but it works for me and my tanks.

IME, which is two attempts, two fish will pair and become aggressive towards the third. Both attempts were with 4 month old clowns from the same clutch. Once they reached about a yr old it became 2 vs. 1.
From what i've read you can add a third clown of a different species to a large tank with an existing pair of clowns. I belive it is more successful with a different body form, like Occi with a skunk.

I have 3 Ocellaris in a 70g now with no issues. I had a 3 yr old pair and introduced a juvenile. There has been no aggression, and all get along. It's going to be up to the fish, you will have to watch for behavior, and be prepared to remove one if necessary.

# of Clowns OK?

I have 3 O. clowns in a 46 bow no problems but they were added at the same time. When I tadded a forth from the same brood he was harrassed and starved to death....:headwallblue:

Currently have 75 g. I dont want one to be an outcast and since I am thinkin of purchasing the snowflake from aquacon.com I dont think I would be able to exchange it so im just lookin to get info, but I will probably just get another pair to avoid fighting even tho these seem extremely friendly .. But thanks for the input and information guys greatly appreciated.

make sure the current pair are mated, and host something, before you add another pair.

Yea and I would hate to see one of my favorite fish die.. I actually had a damsel die yesterday right to the last secord and It hurt so I want to avoid death.. I thought of putting them together at once by the store did not have the snowflke.

Don't do it! Do a quick search on aquacon and they are one of the worst online vendors. How they are still in business is beyond me... oh ya, they rip off newbies before they learn their lesson.

4 to me is too many unless you have a huge tank. You can be successful with 3.

Where else can get a snokeflake ? I don trust hlf the stores dow here in miami

there are many reputable online vendors... start by looking through the vendors forums here on RC. You can also contact ORA for dealers in your area. ORA is in FL, so you should not have a problem finding one, and if they don't have one in stock, they could have it same/next day.

Here is my ORA snowflake (the 3rd added clown - juvenile)

Still think this is a very bad idea and would never recommend it...

What are your back up plans ? Have another tank ready? Willing to remove rock work to catch the fish?

Wow poidog thanks forreal.. I just looked them up and both forums I read say not to order from them. So I guess I look around

This issue has been brought up countless times and been debated on numerous occasions. The general idea is this: Two clownfish will mature in the tank as the dominant pair. Clownfish are territorial, and will typically hunt down the others and kill them (one, two, three...). Sporadically, they will allow a third fish, or sometimes even another pair to live peacefully. This is not the norm though. Also, keep in mind success is measured in years, not months. Many on here are saying it may be ok, but haven't fully disclosed the number of years they have had this work, or how many might have been killed in the process.

I go by this rule of thumb: If you have to ask, you don't have enough knowledge to make an informed decision.

What will you do when aggression starts? Do you have a Qt setup and cycled you can put it in? What would you think if you come home from work and only have two fish left? You would be knowingly putting a fish in a high risk situation. I personally wouldn't play the game of Russian roulette with my fish, and can't support others doing the same.

Listen to Todd. He has many many years of experience under his belt, and his opinions should hold more weight than most on here (including my own).

+1 x1,000

You are a new reefkeeper. I see that you've already been through the phase of wanting multiple large tangs in your 75. Slow down and take it easy. Being cautious and following conservative advice might seem boring, but it also tends to lead to success, as well as less wasted money--and far more important, less suffering for the animals you're acquiring.

what happens when the mature pair start spawning and the female becomes even more aggresive.
