DOW Flakes

Dohh. forgot I can probably pick this up at a pool supply store....If I end up buying the 50lb. bag...anyone want to buy a few lbs.?

Do pool supply stores carry this stuff? How about the bulk in baking soda, and any of the Magnesium chloride and magnesium sulfate?

David,

Is the pool supply stuff pure enough to be used in our tank? Just curious.

Also - I think there was someone (I won't name who) who was thinking about doing a group buy for DowFlake and MagFlake. Baking soda and magnesium sulfate are cheap and easily accessible so I don't think it would be worth doing a group buy on those items.

I would love to find a supply in bulk of all the items in the 3 part solution. I cannot seem to find those items in large bulk sizes - and in bulk I mean like 50lbs of the stuff. If that 'someone' could ever so gracious as make his/her contacts/supplier known that would be exceptional!

Contact California Reefer. I believe that he has the contact information. He did the last group buy for MagFlake and DowFlake. I can use some more MagFlake and a little bit of DowFlake.

MagFlake is MgCl2, and DowFlake is CaCl2. You use MagFlake to increase your Mg and DowFlake to increase your Ca. Both are commonly used in the Randy's Two Part Solution.

That someone is me, but I backed out so now someone else is considering doing a group buy.

John, did you have a distributor in mind you were working with? I cannot imagine ordering this stuff in cups is the most effective pricing we can get.

I never got to the point of finding a distributer... Kept ending up right back at the x cups at a time places.

Nope. It was someone after you. ;-)

I was under the impression that a lot of the pool supply stuff was just the DOW flakes deicer repackaged. If I get some time latter this week I'll stop at the pool supply store on Garfield, as it's on the way to my friend new house.

David - it's funny that a pool supply store is considered a good place to get a bargain. I always thought that they were a complete rip off for pool chemical. :P

BTW - Robert (RasRobre) may also have the information on the vendor.

Just a heads up, if you're looking for a large amount of baking soda check out our local Winco foods. They have baking soda in large bins in the bulk food section. It's also a good excuse to stock up on candy and trail mix while you're there.

Ok I admit it.
It's me who's failing on the GB; John passed it to me and I've just been WAY too swamped, and I just bought a Wii 2 weeks ago so that's pretty much all the hours I have in a day filled

Now that I see people are really wanting it, I guess I will step upto the plate.

I will see what I can whip up tonight for a GB and prices.
Just doing Dow and Mag flakes. Like others said salt and BkSod are easy to find.

heheh I'm still sitting on DI Resin from the last GB.
:)

So far I have found this site
http://www.harveysalt.com/prod01.htm

Waiting on an official price quote from them but others have said pricing is around....

"cost is $15 / 50 lb bag for Mag Flake, and $15.23 / 50 lb bag for Dow Flake."

That quote was on 3/12/07 and did not give any info on shipping.
Anyone else have any other places to check?
Yeah I checked buckeyes and twopart already.
Also I checked http://www.gemplers.com/item/CACL2.html

Usually shipping is about $1.00 per lb with DHL depending on where it's coming from. so...

I won't start an official thread just yet, as I don't have a vendor, shipping cost, and time tables pinned down.
Trying to gather intel before the real thread starts.

Any thoughts?

Well I went to a pool store, and no go. They looked at me reall nervous when I started talking chemicals.
Steve, I would not recomend the calcium chloride from gemplers that you posted. They say 77% purity with that product. I looked up the MSDS for DowFlakes, and it asseys at 84-88%, so potentially 10% purer product.
