Down Under Tropical Fish

What has been the story lately with this place. It seems like every time I drive by in the middle of the day it is closed. How does he stay in business?

Are you talking about the store on Laurel in San Carlos? That guy has a BAD attitude. I went in there a few months ago just to look because I had a dentist appointment in the area, he was very unfriendly.

Yeah, i remember another particular store on the pennisula that used to never be open when I went by, sometimes he opened up at 2pm or something, the explaination is that he was commuting from far away, which to me didn't sound like a good excuse. He went out of business or closed down, either of which is for the better.

Your talking about Joe from underwaterworld.. he was cool.. bought my fish and stuff from him for years... He commuted from sac to SsF which made it hell for him... plus the area where his store was... the whole area ( everystore around ) was bought out to put a giant lowes/home depot or something...

Down Under is the small store on El Camino right on the border of San Carlos and Redwood City. Not the one on Laurel st in San Carlos. The one on Laurel is called Peninsula Tropicals. The owner of Peninsula doesn't know anything about reefs yet he tells people all kinds of things just to sell stuff. Don't trust that guy. Down Under is not really a reef store at all. The owner (Dan) is a nice guy though. That store has quite a history. This is now their third location in that area.

anyone remember back in the day... kyle at penisula, manfred?, and then i think steve at San Mateo Aquarium. ... those were the days.

I heard that Kyle went to a monastery. Man I wish he never sold the place. Manfred is in Sunnyvale now. Scott from San Mateo is a nature photographer and he specializes in wild mushrooms. He also used to moonlight as a speedo model. Weird.
What about seahorse? They were kinda cool. There was also Pet Meister (Pet Sheister). I actually worked there for a few months. I hear they moved to somewhere like Redding. They actually have a website now.

haha they're in the east bay now! i went to school with his son. yea scott was his name, and i remember he left of photography, speedo huh? interesting. Manfred is closing down last i heard, moving again apparently. Sea horse was further down the pen, i didnt venture there that much. And i didnt know kyle went to a monastery, you know offered Alex to buy his business? wouldn't that have been weird, or was it kyle? i think it was scott.

Who is in the east bay now?
Manfred is going to be in the same shopping center that he's in now. Just in a different part of the complex.
Seahorse was on Woodside Rd in Redwood. Right across the street from the old Down Under.

delsol650 is right. Joe commuted every day from Sac to SSF, which is in the neighborhod of 160 miles or 3 hours each way. He really was a good guy and fair dealer interested in the hobby and livestock he sold. I think its just a basic impossability to make a commute like that work. After the prop owner sold out to the HD or Lowes that is supposed to go there sometime, he mentioned he might open up in the E. Bay. I would expect not having to commute 30 hours a week has done much to make him miss it such that he'd do it again.
Normal work hours per year are 2080, imagine commuting for about 1500 hours on top of that? Ouch.
Wouldn't be surprised to hear that he's opened up a shop in Sacramento area maybe.

Any care to comment on Wet Pets?

Knew a lot of inside baseball stuff about the local fish stores.
