Don't know too much about the software but I have had plenty of experience with X10. Depending on the wiring in your house it may work great or cause you a lot of aggravation. If the wiring in your house is on the older side the X10 signal may not be able to go from one phase to the other (breakers on the left to the breakers on the right in your panel). This can be fixed by use of a $40 phase coupler. The X10 signal is greatly affected by noise on the electrcial lines. Flourescent light and MH light ballast create a lot of electrical noise whcih will stop the signal from going through. X10 devices cannot be plugged into a surge strip as the protection circuit on the strip will not allow the signal through. I use X10 for my house lighting but not on my tank. The tank circuits are segragated electrically from the remainder of the circuiting as to not cause any noise problems from the electronic ballasts. I tried using it for the tank lighting with little success. It all works until the MH lights come on. Then nothing else connected to that circuit receives a signal and I had to shut the MH lights off manually. Even tried different more expensive ballasts and had the same problem. GFI circuits can also be a nuisance with X10.

That was something I was worried about. How buggy the x10 is. I am checking out the reef keeper 2 also. I seem to like that one more. Seems reasonably priced.

I have one. I tried it for a month or so but I could never get it to work right. The X10 modules/firecracker controller were not dependable enough for me. There was no way to calibrate the pH meter either. I ended up buying an Aquacontroller with direct connects.
