I can't remember where out saw this but I think the idea was to minimize salt creep by catching most of the splash in the vertical "standpipes" as I'll call them. I haven't seen too much and if I put my hand over it I can feel a little bit of splatter. I was thinking about putting a 180 on them for any condensation to go back in the sump...yeah I over thought it lol.
I've found that the Tees help prevent "burping" and huge amounts of air from bubbling down into the sump. The air can escape vertically.
