I think that I read somewhere on here that that would work, but I can't find it...the trick was in making sure you could a) clean it out for clogs, b) release any air trapped in it.

I think you will run into trouble. I dont think you have enough elevation between tanks (sumps) to get the flow desired. not enough water pressure from sump 1 to sump 2 : pressure resulting from gravity that is.
