Dried out base rock into established tank?

I've got some pieces of live rock that I let dry out a while back, and I have a place in my tank that a piece is needed for. Would it be harmful to my tank to put a piece of it back in there? What do I need to do to make it safe to put in there? The tank is about 3 years old. It's a reef.

Thanks,
Brad

I'd wash it out and scrub it pretty good before adding it to get any old detritus/nitrates out, but other than that it should be perfectly fine to add it.

By the way, its nice to see a couple GIS guys on here, hopefully the field is really starting to pick up. That was my concentration coming out of college, but I couldn't find a decent job in it so I ended up becoming a programmer. I kind of miss GIS. I wouldn't mind going back to it eventually.

I would boil it in clean water, then scrub it, then rinse in RO water. Should be perfectly fine. You'll probably get algae/cyano on that one rock for a little while.

Thanks for the advice!

Thanks for the heads up about the link. I just changed it.......I don't know why it ended up dead. That's strange.

Thanks,
Brad

My problem with getting a decent GIS job was that I live out in the middle of no where in northern MD. There's TONS of high-paying and exciting jobs in GIS down in DC (hell the census bureau is there), but that's a 2+ hour commute. Baltimore city itself is farther than I wanted to commute, so it limited me pretty badly to what GIS jobs I could look for. Then a software engineer position was offered to me so I took it. Someday I'll probably get back in GIS. Maybe after I finish my masters.

You're probably making more money in programming than you would in GIS right now. At least, that's what I've seen.

I had a bunch of old reef rock, I put it into my 2.5 and killed everything!!!!! I have about thirty pounds in a bucket with LS "curing" the amonia spike is over and the NO2 has hit a high. Its been about four weeks since I started. I have been using the water I am taking out of my other two tanks to help out this one. Never did think to boil it though???
