DRILL aquarium only 1 DownPipe?

Good afternoon, everyone.

I have a 55-gallon aquarium, and I’m considering drilling a single 45 mm hole to connect an external PVC pipe leading to a sump. My main concern is whether it’s safe and efficient to run only one drain line.

While doing some research, I found a device that specifies a 42 mm hole for installation. I’d like to know if anyone here has experience using it, and if it actually works well with a single drain setup.

In my case, I’m planning to drill a 45 mm hole, install a black internal overflow box inside the tank, and run PVC plumbing on the outside directly down to the sump. Do you think this configuration would work properly?

I was a bit worried about relying on just one drain, but I’ve noticed that these systems are designed to handle both the drain and return through a single bulkhead. I’d really appreciate your feedback on whether having an emergency drain is still necessary in this kind of set.
