i read somewhere on tonmo that someone drilled there tank for an overflow on the back corner of the tank (not the bottom but the side) becuase the bottom was tempered glass. i guess the sides wernt? how can you tell if the sides are tempered or not? has anyone here done this? is there any problem with doing this? im very interested in this cuase my tank has a tempered sticker on the bottom but doesnt say anything about the sides and i would love to get rid of the HOB OF.

Here is a quote from it.

Here are the basics to the tank:

-150 gallon display glass tank (Drilled the back bottom two corners to create two 1 inch overflows) I didn't drill the bottom for it was tempered glass.
-AquaEuro Recirculating 265 skimmer (Plumbed external from sump for less heat)
-30 Gallon sump with DIY trickle wet dry containing 1 cubic foot of biobale and a small refugium.
-PanWorld 50PX-X (Externally plumbed With a fan modification dropping the tank temp 2 degrees)
-Wavy Sea wave maker
-Icecap Vortec pump for circulation and less heat. (I know expensive..Very nice flow, circulates water ALL over the tank without too strong a force or suction. Im incredibly impressed with it)
-Dual 250 Watt MH and 4 36" T5 39 watt for lighting. (MH will only be on for a couple hours a day)
-Custom made Stand and Hood

The bottoms are tempered to hold the weight. The sides never are tempered, that's why people can drill them for closed loops and such. The sticker on the bottom signifies that just the bottom is tempered. I believe that there is a way to tell if they're tempered without smashing them, I just don't know off the top of my head and am too tired to look it up. Sorry. But i'm pretty sure that's the case.

lol thanks. why dont you go get some sleep? is there anything bad about haveing your overflow drilled into the side of the tank instead of the bottom?

Tperk mentioned this, and I agree with him from my last tank. If you are going to drill, you should use an external overflow in the back of the tank. This keeps it looking cleaner inside of the tank.

thanks that gave me a good idea of what i want to do. anyone here that can drill me a few holes? i dont have the tools or the money to go and have some shop do it for me :/

Here is one thread it should give you a place to start your search. I know that there are a few ways to drill for this, one is teeth style, the other would be the standard 1" holes.
