Well it was bound to happen sooner or later!!
I just did not expect it on a 10G tank!!

Rockwyld dropped by today to have his 10G sump drilled out, and as I was drilling I got almost all the way through and POP, glass went flying!!

I've hard that some Walmart tanks are tempered, and since his tank was a hand down he didn't know where it came from.

So we jumped in my van and headed over to Petco and got another 10G tank that WAS NOT TEMPERED ;)
Came back and drilled that one

Now here's the weird thing!!
While breaking it up to go into my trash can we found out that ALL sides were tempered, BUT the bottom WAS NOT tempered!!
Figure that out!!

Just thought you'd all like to see pics :)

hahah
Uhhh yeah Saftey Glasses......
Right...........

heheh, I'm so unsafe even when I work in constuction.
I admit it, I need work on that ;)

About the only thing I wear saftey glasses when using a dremel.

Oh shoots, glad I found this thread. I was ready to order diamond holesaw to do a coast to coast set up and read on this tempered glass deal. Went to check my tank (brand new Marineland) and found a sticker on the bottom "tempered glass do not drill". Called the LFS, yep tempered all the way:( . Then he says glass companys have ways to drill tempered . From my readings I dont think so, what do you guys think?

When I saw the title I thought WHAT?, YOU CAN DRILL TEMPERED GLASS?

Sure, no problem, just just don't get a nice clean hole...

:D

You may be able to drill the sides of your tank for overflows and closed loops and such, but the bottom is out if it has that sticker on it :(

There is no way to drill tempered, even glass shops can't do it.
Manuf can do it because they drill the glass BEFORE they temper it..

I've heard people have claimed to drill tempered tanks before. I say the glass wasn't tempered very well if that was the case. At least you got most of the way through, though!

Too bad you didn't get a video of that one!!! Glad everyone is ok.

As far as safety glasses go... I can't think how many times I get little bits of whatever just under my glasses and eyes with the dremel. Further, one day while weedeating/weedwhacker I was wearing glasses and had them get impacted from a rock or something. Very glad I had them on that day. My problem is keepling them scrach free over time.

Yep. My $25 safety glasses scratch just as easily as my $4 safety glasses.

It usually isn't until I get an eyeful of something that I remember to put them on....

Thanks Steve, the guy at the LFS said it was tempered on all 4 sides as well as the bottom. I just emailed Marineland and hope to get a response about the sides. Thanks again for your help.
