Drilling tanks?

Hi all,

I was wondering if someone is or knows somebody that is experienced in drilling tanks? I am working on a new setup and have called around to all of the local stores and none of them drill tanks. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Aquaworld would drill the tanks. Quite a few of us here have drilled tanks before. How big is the tank you're looking to drill?

Thanks guys! The tank I want to drill is a 30g Oceanic cube 20x20x18. I did call Elmer's and they told me that they don't drill anymore - Wet Pets referred me to a place called Rex Glass that was closed when I called. This will be the first tank I'm trying to drill so I don't have any experience with it, but I would appreciate any help and/or suggestions.

Make sure it's not tempered glass. then if you need some pointers, I can help you out just send me a PM. It's not to difficult, you just have to be patiant and use your noggen. Oh and screw the drill guide just use a wood hole saw bit and put a hole in a 2x4/2x6 the same size as the hole your going to put in the glass, then clamp it (the 2x6) to the glass, and drill away, following the intructions above.

aquaworld does it and you can buy insurance so if it breaks they give you a new one... definitely worth it cause mine did break on their first attempt.

Depending on the size of the hole you need, I might be able to help you out with drilling it too. I know Tom has various size drill bits too.

I have a one inch diamond drill bit - I have never used it - I think only used once before I bought it.

Hey Craig - after some serious searching, I finally found the Pgh forum! Thanks for pointing me in the right direction! After you stopped by on Sunday, I'm definitely leaning towards drilling for my new setup.

cloakerpoked - if you would be able to help, I would really appreciate it. Not looking for anything too fancy, just want to drill a center overflow and return. Not sure what size hole would be best, still have some research to do, but suggestions are welcome.

The bottom of that tank might be tempered, look for a sticker. If so, that pane can't be drilled. The back is probably not tempered, though.

Yeah, the bottom is definitely tempered so I'll be drilling the back of the tank. After doing a bit more research, I am thinking about doing a 1 1/2" bulkhead for an internal overflow box and a 3/4" return. Any thoughts?
