ok i know your not supposed to drill tempered glass.... is it possible to drill a side or back ? bk this one is for you or logic i think.... i found a tank i want ..its a 200 g but the bottom has that friggen tempered tag on it

Jason, you can drill the back/side panes of the glass. It's somewhat rare to fined the whole tank to be tempered. Most tanks I've seen have just the bottom tempered leaving the side panes. I've also heard some folks say they drilled the through the tempered bottom. But I have no fact's to back that up.

Your correct, It is NOT OK to drilled tempered glass. Just because the bottom has a TEMPERED tag on it, does not mean you should lose hope. Likely it is just the bottom of the tank that is tempered.

Do you know who the manufacturer of the tank is? Do you know the age of the tank? These two answers alone would likely reveal whether or not the tank is tempered on the sides just by visiting the manufacturers website and downloading the PDA document on their tempered tanks. Tempering the sides of tanks is becoming surprisingly more common on new tanks due to the fact that more manufacturers are now selling RR tanks.

If your still not sure about the sides, get yourself two polarized camera lenses, holding one on each side of the glass- you should see a crazy pattern if it IS tempered. Do the same test on one of your car windows (NOT windshields) because they are tempered as well. Sometimes just wearing polarized sunglasses will reveal this effect if your looking at it outside in the sun.

Polarized camera lenses can be had for about $20 each. A little pricey sure, but you would need to compare that price to a new(replacement) pane of glass, and decide what is more valuable in your situation.

Personaly... I would not worry about it and just drill the thing, but I don't want to be the reason you broke a pane of glass on your tank, so please disregard my personal opinion. :)

What logik said.

It depends on the manufacturer and the age of the tank. I have drilled a 55 gallon with a sticker on the bottom and the sides shattered into pieces. That was a Perfecto tank. Then again I drilled a whole bunch of holes into 40 gallon breeders and all but one were ok. They all looked the same but one had tempered glass for some reason...

If you decide to get this thing and drill it just let me know and I'll give you a hand...

it was my tank and I can assure you that we were not able to drill through the sides on a tank that it said the bottom was tempered... but like BK said it was a perfecto and they are just an odd company,

either way good luck LOL

I drilled a 29g that had the tempered tag on the bottom, I drilled holes in the back pane. I don't know what type brand it was though. I'd drill it, But then hence my SN. Stupid is as Stupid does I guess. The tank didn't break and was used for about a year as a reef tank. But were talking about a 29g that was free compared to a 200g that I'm sure you put up some dough for.

well it is a perfecto tank and from what the rep there said the only tanks they do that are all tempered are the smaller style and the fronts of "bowfronts"
