Dry Rocks

Hello All

I am setting a 12gl nano tank for my son. I ordered some dry rock. I am thinking to take out some live rocks from my established tank and add to my sons tank. And replace my live rocks with the new dry rocks.

My question is that do I have to cure the rocks before adding or I can simply add it after a good rinse.

When you say dry rock do you mean "˜clean' dry rock with no organics left on the rock? Or is it dead rock with organics that will need to decompose first?

If there are no organics, technically you could fill the new tank with water from your established tank, a couple pieces of cycled live rock from your established system and have a completely cycled system immediately.

If you bought BRS Pukani you might want to cycle first in a storage container as there have been issues with it leaching PO4. Better to get rid of that before you start your tank or you're in for a ton of headaches fighting algae blooms.

I have no clue if it is BRS or not.
If you can search the number 112621254431 on eBay it will directly bring to the rock I bought. Can you please check and advise.

Looked on EBay. That doesn’t appear to be Pukani. You could have your rock in salt water and heaters and kept in a storage bin for a week or so and test the water for PO4 just to be sure.

No problem.

Regardless of what the seller says, you should still take your own precaution and test for PO4. Could save you lots of time and money down the road.

How long does rock need to be in water before you suspect you can test for phosphate leakage?

I've got about 60 lbs of rock that was formerly in someone elses tank. It got an acid bath, and I've had it in a bucket of warm hot water with a powerhead to move it around for about 2 weeks now. I'm adding ammonia and waiting for it to cycle out.

I plan to test for phosphates, but I don't know how long it takes to leak out

I've got about 60 lbs of rock that was formerly in someone elses tank. It got an acid bath, and I've had it in a bucket of warm hot water with a powerhead to move it around for about 2 weeks now. I'm adding ammonia and waiting for it to cycle out.

You should be good to test now.

Just finished testing it, and it looks like I have between 0.31 and 0.34 ppm Phosphate in the garbage can of water and rock. Using a hanna checker. My actual tank is 0.00 with the same checker, so good to know.

I checked the water today and it has 0.1 po4 reading. Should I be concern or add the rocks to my tank. Please note that my tank is still in the cycling process and will have few water change before I add the fish.

You could add them, just note that if there is die-off on the rock you are adding you will re-start the cycle again until the dead organics are gone.

Test regularly and you will know when the cycle is completed after you add your rock to the system.
