DSB Heresy

Shipmate, LDR configured his to continously drain into a seperate filter setup where the water would be "cleaned". Other people have it just continously draining and others just open a valve up and drain a gallon, pint, whatever once or twice a day.
 
That post sounds like ldrhawke, but he hasn't posted on coralforum.com since 5/8. He last posted on reefcentral.com on 5/13. I am constructing a CPW system currently and would love to get an update on his. Anyone have an idea how to contact him?
 
I have had a CPW system setup in my 5'x3'x2' for the last 4 months, have not drain anything out since my tank parameters are Ok. Will do a small drain later in the week. Will test parameters and post back.

I have used 1/2" pvc tubing in a butterfly shape arrangement. with 2" of CC and 2" of fine reef sand.

I wasted another 5 gals today. Mild H2SO4 smell, wasted water tested NO3 - Undet PO4 - Undet. Tank tested NO3 - 1 ppm and PO4 - Undet.

I guess the sand bed is doing it's job processing the NO3. The PO4 test kit was made by Lamotte. So it's a reliable reading.
 
I think 5 gallons is way more water than in your sandbed, so the water you are testing contains a lot of tank water, not just water from the sandbed.
 
I don't agree. The first 24 hours of filling my tank w/ ro barely began covering my sandbed (35gpd ro unit). I have a large sandbed. I watch the water being drained and the water at the end is still tinted yellow. My tank has 350 lbs of southdown, 150 lbs of crushed coral and 30 lbs of live sand.
 
I am planing to set up a new tank and plan to set it up for CPW. I hope that Idrhawke has not gotten so fed up, by the way some people treated him here, that we do not hear from him again.

If ldrhawke gave up because of criticisms on this board, that wouldn't say much for his character, would it.

You have to be able to take criticism if you bring up ideas and challenges on this board (or any board).

Bomber in another thread mentioned that the CPW has been tried and extensively discussed years ago. Richard Harker apparently tried it. It would be nice to have him give us some input but I could not find a way to contact him.
 
My system has a total volume of 440 gallons. I have gone to a weekly 10 gallon water change thru my CPW. The hydrogen sulfide smell is now gone and the cpw water tests undet for nitrates an PO4.

The water in my tank tests 1ppm for nitrates and undet for PO4.
 
I just came across this thread. This idea isnt new. Worked well for the person that I knew that was doing it.
 
Anyone read Bob Goeman's forum in the August FAMA? Did anyone think the first question came from ldrhawke? The main reason I thought it might be was the guy's occupation in waste management.
