DSB in sump of frag tank?

On my 40G frag tank I want to add more bio filtration. I do not want to have sand or LR in the display. I plan to add a sump with a "fuge" section, that will more serve as a DSB chamber. Any reason why this would not be effective? Should the walls of this chamber be blacked out? How deep is the minimum/maximum for an effective RDSB?

No need blackout ... if sugar fine sand, I'd go for 4 inches up ... there is no max depth/ height.
