dual megaflow plumbing question

Hater of Hair Algae
I'm looking into upgrading and am wondering about how the return/s are plumbed in a dual megaflow setup. Is ther just one return or are there two returns???

I'm looking into a 210g, anyone know how many gph a return pump would need to be if I used a tee on the return?

Or would I be able to use my rio3100 for one return and my rio2500 for the other return?

Thought about that too. I decided against it as RIO does not have the best track record on reliability. I have three 2500's and two have failed to restart after a brown out. I now use them for mixing salt water. I actually bought an OR3500 to replace my one RIO return and have been happy with it.

Ya I've heard rio pumps aren't reliable but I already have a 3100 and 2500 that I've had almost two years and would use them just to get started. On another note I take it your OR3500 is connected to a tee?

Yes, the OR is connected to a tee. Personally, I like to sump flow to be slow so my skimmer can take in more nasty water. I use in-tank power heads to compensate. Also, I am doing FOWLR, so someone doing a reef may have another opinion. Also keep in mind that if you use a fuge, you want a little slower water flow so you dont wash everything out, or at least to one side. Again, this is just my personal choice.

sjj80 -

I assume you refers to AGA. I have a 210. If you want more flow, you might want to consider using both holes one each megaflow for draining and add new returns behind the tank. Each megaflow as stated by AGA can handle 600 GPH but many here have push upwards of 800 - 1000 GPH without issue.

just my 2 cents - I would not rely on RIO for your main pump. If you go with 210 - an external pump makes better sense. If pricing is a concern, look @ used external pump.

Is Oceanic and AGA the same brand/company??? I've seen people refer to their oceanic as an AGA and have wondered if they are the same.

As far as pumps go I don't use anything that isn't submersible, same goes with all other equipment with the exception of uv sterilizer and lighting of course.

On that note any reccommendations on a submersible pump?

I believe it's now Aqueon - http://www.aqueonproducts.com/

Yes - they are the same manufacture but still selling under different brands.

submersible pump - i would not rely on RIO or Quiet One as my main pump (back OK). Mag seems better suited from what I gathered and from my own experience. Eheim - if you need much GPH or pressure.

FYI - I just thrown away 3-4 Quiet One pumps this pass two weeks (accumulation over the past 2 yrs.) RIO - I thrown those that stop working years ago.

I have heard lots of negative comments RE Mag submersables, but I have two 9.5s on my system, one is submersed in sump for return, the other is external as a closed loop. Both have been in service for 6 months, never a problem to restart. I also have a GenX on my 90 gal cichlid tank as a return and it has not failed in over a year. I cant say anything about Rios other than I have used the small power heads with adequate results... just swapped them out a couple of months ago for the broader Koralias.

The problem with Rios is that when running with head pressure (such as a return pump) they ultimately wear out the impeller body (not the actual plastic impeller, but the part it mates to) against the ceramic shaft. The ceramic shaft lasts for years but the impeller hole gets worn into an oval. As it gets worse the impeller body starts to rub against the inside of the pump leading to pumps that won't start unless you bang the side of them. Replacing the impeller fixes the problem completely. I have been using the same Rio 2100 on my protein skimmer for 9 years. I've replaced the impeller about 5 times. I don't think they're junk, they just require periodic impeller replacements. Better as power heads than returns. About 2 years ago I replaced my Rio 2500 I was using as a return with a T2 Velocity - best pump I've ever used. I've also used Quiet One 1200 and 3000 pumps (NOT quiet at all) - can't recommend those, had restart problems from day one.
