Dull baby tomatoes

I have reared a batch of tomato babies which are now 7 months old. They are hardy, fast growing and full of personality. Unfortunately they aren't colouring up. They are a dull orange color while their parents are a bright vibrant red- orange. I feed three to four times a day: one feeding of omega one super color flake and two or more feelings of otohime pellets size C-1 and C-2. Water parameters are normal. I use T-8 lights. There are no nitrates, s.g. Is 1.0021 and temperature is 80.

neither of the feeds you listed are known for high astaxanthin content. That is what you want to get the color into those fish.

Afraid I cannot suggest the feed I think would help (I work for the manufacturer) but I can say, search where you got the Otohime from :D

I think I can help with this one. What you're looking for is Otohime TDO. I've used it since day 6 and my babies are bright orange.

Hi. I have tried using astaxanthin powder that is added to the babies oto pellets with a bit of selco to help it adhere plus color flakes for about two months with no change. But strangely enough, the subsequent batches of babies I have raised are nice and bright!

Otohime is a brand in its own, as is TDO.

TDO uses both powder and oil forms of astaxanthin. Its very easy to get it to oxidize into a lessor form with improper storage. Most powders will loose their astaxanthin count in a year, less with exposure to light, oxygen and moisture.

Oops... did I really write that? I meant Chroma Boost TDO. TDO = Top Dressed Otohime, correct?

We've stopped using the word Otohime pretty much in all cases now, when talking about TDO. TDO Chroma BOOST is the actual brand name. But yes, its top dressed Otohime.

Babies are much brighter but still not as bright as what I see in fish stores. I have started using tdo chromaboost and will post results in about a month. I have been using tdo from day five for all my babies but have only recently been aware of the chromaboost product. I will then post before and after pics.

The tomato babies are quite bright now. The chroma boost is working very well. Anyone know how to post pics? I would like to post a before and after.

Turns out that chromaboost is no longer allowed into Canada so I will have to look elsewhere for color food but I will try today to get some before and after pics up. Thank you for all your help:twitch:

Its not that its not allowed. People do get the proper permits and it does get it. but you have to get the permits yourself, and for some its been a real heachache. I suspect once the new US FSMA goes through for animal feeds, it'll be easier to get feeds into Canada.
