dumb question about phytoplankton and uv sterilizer.

I got bunch of clams that like DTs

Is it a problem to nuke live phytoplankton? Will the altered dna cause cancer to my clams...

I used to turn the uv off but then I found out it wasnt designed to be turned on and off.
