dumb question

this may sound stupid, and by all means call me stupid if it is, but.............what does "fragging" mean? i hear the term alot, but i don't get it

when you take 1 coral and make 2 out of it or 3 or 4 or however many you can...be careful if you would ever try, most coral are toxic and polytoxins could make you sick if you touch them with cuts on your hands.....and yes you are stupid....lol j/k...how would you ever learn

generally "frags" (fragments) are made but cutting off portions of a coral and ataching them to a substrate. the original coral in most cases will heal and the fragments will grow and become new colonies. there are different methods depending on what and type of coral is being fragged. It can be compared to how some plants can be cut and replanted.

by the way no question is dumb :)

It is a way of getting one nice coral into a hundred tanks, which keeps hobbyists happy and lowers the cost---and didn't have to be taken from a wild reef. People use things as mundane as garden shears to (expertly) prune bits from their corals and glue them to rock bases. This is a 'frag'. If you have a sick coral that is losing tissue you can save it (and maybe multiply it) by fragging the good ends. And if you accidentally break a coral you can just glue the parts to bases and have more of them. Frags are inexpensive compared to wild corals and grow very well, often covering the epoxy bond that holds them to their base and growing to the rock on which they're set.

Stupidity never asks a question. Sorry, you'll have to turn in your stupid card. ;) Good question---and a hundred and three other people read the post either to help or learn the answer.

i'm on my second one, had to put my first one down due to bladder problems no one could fix.:( the best dogs i've ever had! hands down. Kain, the one i have now, is the biggest baby you'll ever see, there ain't a mean bone in his body. he's a red dobe, absolutely gorgeous. you thinking about getting one? the only bad thing about them is their a**, they'll fart you out of a room. i'm going to post his pic under my name as soon as i figure out how

Yes, they are great dogs. I had one as well. I had to put him down also due to arthritis and bladder problems too. One of the hardest things I ever did. His name was Axle and I had him since he was six weeks old. He lived with me and my family for 12 1/2 years. He was black/rust. And yes you are right, they are the best dogs.

here he is with my kids

haha the same could be said of my wife

he's a nice looking dog! i'd like to get another one, and i'd like to get a black & tan, or another red. they're both really cool colors. here's some pictures of my guy, i got him from the Illinois dobe rescue, so he was 2 years old already when i got him. he was 55 pounds! :eek1: they found him as a stray in chicago. he's a 90 lb fatso now. sorry to hear about Axle, i feel your pain, they're too good a dog to have to put down.

Nice looking dog. I bet he gets a lot of treats with that puppy face. I think if I do get another doberman, I will get him from the doberman rescue here in texas. They are such great dogs to have. People get the wrong impression by watching them on tv as vicious watch dogs. I miss Axle. I will never again have a closer friend.

i am actually about to do a presentation for my local aquarium club about fraging. The break a or prune a piece off then glue it down comments refer to hard corals. most soft corals are a little bit harder to deal with then that, but only a little. if your interested send me a pm with your email adress and when i am done with the presentation i can send you a copy of it if your interested. By the way, one more thing. The word also applys to some non coral things like sponges which can also be split up. I suppose you could also do the same with starfish for that matter. They say that as long as part of the mouth remains on a starfish it can regenerate. Dont try it with one you arent willing to lose though.

most people dont realize what a good family dog a doberman is. the main reason they have a bad name is that they can be protective. it also depends on the dog, Kain isn't protective at all. you could hop in my truck and drive away and he wouldn't care as long as you pet him. i don't know if i like them better with natural ears or cropped, as i've had both. thanks piranhaking! my tank's too new to have corals in it yet, but anything i can learn about them would be awesome
