Dumb things you've overheard customers say at the LFS

Last week me and a couple of buddies of mine (one knows about f/w, the other think's he knows everything in general) Were at the LFS. I was picking up a Arowana for my f/w buddies new 300g tank (tried to convince him to do salt!). I was checking out some coral when we stumbled upon a leopard shark. My friend asked if he made his tank salt, if he could keep it. Before I could even BEGIN to explain why that was a terrible shark to attempt to keep, My stupid friend said, with no sarcasm whatsoever, "of course you can!, They've got miniature sharks now that stay that small forever!"

I seriously got upset when he kept insisting he was right. Luckily Scott Michaels "sharks and rays" was an arms length away, so you know I had to school him!

I don't think that 1/10 guy is going to be that insulted if they are genuinely dedicated to keeping a reef. The one that is insulted will be the one that has got the right setup by going out and spending loads of money but doesn't care about correct treatment or compatibility. ie. "when it dies I'll just buy another one to replace it"

usually the people who do get offended really don't know what they're talking about.
They're the ones who have being saltwater for years and years and have a 55 with an undergravel as the only filtration, use tap water, don't add anything, haven't changed their crush coral in 15 years and want to get another clown and anemone "cause they only last a few months, saltwater stuf... Protien Skimmer? Oh yeah i have an overflow box that skims the gunk off the surfacef"

lacie,

I know a few people like that. Its strange how some people dont evolve in the hobby while others do. You'd think they would either a)give up or b)get more informed

Lacie,

LOL Yep !!! I remember the first move to saltwater in my house as a child. 29 gallon, metal frame and a slate bottom tank. I even remember the store mentioning the anemones would need to be replaced. Good thing coral wasn't even available then.

I get alot of that too. Our store is fish only, no frogs, turtles, or salamanders, just fish. People come in all the time, walk around the store, then ask where the dogs and cats are. It's crazy.

These ones aren't that funny but some people just don't think for themselves.
Customer: How much does a fish tank cost?
Me: It depends on which one.
Customer: Just in general.
Me: There is a drastic price difference based on what type of a tank you want. Can you give me an idea what you are looking for?
Customer: Can't you just give me a ballpark price?
Now as all of you know you can set up a nano for less than $100 or a 200gal or bigger for thousands. Some people just want you to take them by the hand.

C: How many fish can I put in this tank?
M: It depends on what fish.
C: Any.
M: There are lots of different fish. They all have different requirements. You can have 100 of some fish or 1 of another. It just depends on what fish you are interested in.
C: Why can't you just tell me how many?

At the end of either of these conversations the only thing to do is spit something stupid out like $300 or 5 fish. Otherwise they get T'd off and leave.

petergillett, why don't you read the title of this thread? Stick to it before people really start flamin. A lot of people on here are workers from LFSs and they are mostly good, honest, people. There seems to be a concensus here that LFSs are horrible and people should avoid them. These employees take a lot of guff here and they finally have a thread to vent a little. Then you come along. Please stop adding to the length of this thread unless you are going to say something funny.

I took the time to read this thread and what I have to say is: some of these customers are special, in the bad way. At least I know what I have to look forward to if I get that summer job at The Coral Reef (my local reef store, salt only).

You know about, the whole nemo and dory thing... Didn't these people watch the movie? the point of the movie was that they were trying to save nemo from us "evil aquarists" and return to the ocean... kids. Sometimes I'm glad I don't have any.

I was working behind the counter at the LFS here and was standing there BS'ing w/ the owner. This irate customer (who had a history of being problematic) walks in the door stomps right up to the counter thrusts a baggie with a dead tang in it at me (both of which are frozen solid from being kept in the freezer for several days post mortem) and demands: "WHATS WRONG WITH MY FISH!" I take the bag...knock it against the counter a couple of times hand it back to her...look her right in the eye and tell her "It's dead". Then she demands a refund. So i ask for a recepite which she gives me...the fish was bought a week ago. At the time we had a 24 hour gurantee for full credit and 72 hours for half credit. So i tell her i cant give her one and she demands why not. So i turn around and read the big sign on the wall that is right behind me spelling out our policy.

I know this thread is old but I'll post this any way you may enjoy it ..
I once walked in to my friendly neighbouhood reef store and asked if they could identify this strange thing that was growing out of my rock on the back side of my tank,,,no I didnt have a picture..
