Just want o know if it is okay to dump saltwater in basement sumps (do not mix it with aquarium sump)? does it affect the sump pump or the pipes by having saltwater in it.

Any idea?

Thanks

The pipes shouldn't matter but I wouldn't take the chance of the pump corroding out from the salt and not working when you need it. It was a thought that went through my head too a few months back but felt the risk is too high. That being said I plan to have an extra pump t'd into the pipes that exit the house with a backflow valve.

Another info I missed earlier was that my sump empties the water in the city sewer meaning no septic system hence I am not worried about the ill effects of salt in the soil. My only concern is the actual sump pump malfunctioning due to salt. I know it will not happen overnight but if I develop this habit to always dumping used saltwater in the sump then who knows when the pump will fail and cause problems.

Got a heavy effluent zoeller pump in my sump and have been dumping saltwater from water changes for 5 years or better and to no effect on the pump. My fish room sink dumps into it also. Had a check valve stick and had to pull the pump a few months ago and it had no excessive rust or corrosion.

I did it that way for years outwith issue as well. I did, however, flush about 5g of fresh water into the pit to help ward off evil spirits.

Unless your sump pump is a $49 fleabay special, I wouldn't worry about it at all. If it is a $49 fleabay special, you should replace it with a good one anyway.
