Duncan coral problems

Unfortunately, the duncan didn't open up today. I didn't change anything or do anything to the tank. I'm not sure why it didn't open because it was making a lot of progress. Hopefully it was just today. Maybe one of the other inhabitants disturbed it.

I was gone most of today but I did not see the duncan open or attempt to open at all. Does anyone know what might have caused it to suddenly stop making progress and go back to its original state? Do I have to go back to the drawing board?

Not sure why it didn't open the past two days, but they did open a little bit today. Does anybody know why it stopped opening for two days? Was it just like what harobikes1988 was talking about?

I received a 3 headed duncan last January 31st. It was a birthday gift. Mine did the exact same thing for at least 4 months. I may of moved it around 3 or 4 times, always on the sand bed.
Finally settled in a low flow area. Then really started to open up. 7 new heads popped up, and just like that it has 10 heads! Now it doesn't matter what kind of flow its in. Duncan is still in the same spot with high flow.
It will close up time to time, but no more than a day or two.

Ok, I'll just leave it alone and see how it works out. Hopefully it will open up for good soon.

It took mine a while. I was wondering same thing. Is there something wrong with my duncan? They are very hardy and just give some time.
That's an old pic, duncan stretches out much more than that. In comparison to a d cell battery.

Yeah. I've heard about other people having their duncan take awhile to adjust. I'll just leave it alone for now and give it some time. Thanks for the help everyone

Also, check your magnesium levels... I had Duncans that just wouldn't open for a long time.. Turned out my mag was low, which really stops them from opening up.

Actually my magnesium is either spot on or a little high. I've gotten 2 different recommendations for the level it should be. It isn't low though. What is the proper magnesium level?

Mine started with two heads. It didn't like a lot of flow on it either. It seemed to open up best low in the tank. I know it does go through a couple days of being closed every once and awhile. Mine will readily take mysis shrimp or anything that falls into it when the fish are eating.

I had duncans in my 180 that never opened in over a year(under MH in sand bed) however once I moved them to my wifes tank under T5 HO they seemed to open right away.

Thanks for the stories of your successes/failures chamjack and usmc121581. I'm surprised your's survived if it didn't open for over a year

Believe me there were times I was ready to toss it in sump, but I am one of those reefers who thinks that if there is a tiny trace of flesh showing it can be saved.
