Duncan Help

About two weeks ago I mistakenly used GE silicone in a new refugium, then my tank sprang leak, and in the meantime my hydrometer decided to be unfaithful leaving me with a salinity of 1.030.

While all this was happening my water parameters stayed par.
i transferred my living coral to a 10 gal holding tank while i got everything together.

Now I have new 40B setup for 6 days and my Duncan and Candy Cane coral are still in hiding. Water parameters have stayed consistent and all other coral are doing well including Pocillopora, Frogspawn, and my Montipora is coming back from being all white!

How long should I give ol' Dunc before he comes out of hiding? should I be trying to feed?

You can see color in his testicles still and minor movements as well as Candy Cane. He is sitting in sand bed under moderate led lighting and moderate flow.

Sorry I can't help, but didn't know that Duncans had testicles. :lmao: Couldn't resist. Funny what can happen when you hit just one wrong key when typing.

LOL! I did not even realize it. I do not have any pics, however I can say it looks no different than any other 3 headed Duncan(with testicles) that is fully "in".

what type of lighting? and were are they located? They do like flow

I have 26 3w led over 40 breeder and have ol' Dunc placed on the sand bed with a moderate flow. I would say that it would be moderate lighting in that position. My Frogspawn is just a step above doing very well; not even an inch higher.

I'm actually curious about this as well. I haven't had much luck getting my Duncan to extend; water parameters are perfect, all other corals thriving (including SPS). Hope this gets resolved

duncans can stay retracted for a while as they get acclimated. Turn down the flow to a low flow if possible, and just wait. It could take a week or so for it to open up.

I moved mine to the top layer in a high light high flow area and they both swelled up. When I was acclimating them on the lower levels they stayed much smaller.

I was reading in another thread about 5 pages deep someone mentioned they had a Duncan that stayed in for two months until it finally showed. This Duncan was doing awesome from the day I got it until the big crash of 2013! It is in the same lighting and current as it was prior so I do not think that is a problem, however I am thinking about moving it in about a week if no change. I sure do wish I could enjoy it more as it never went in until this.

Duncan are one of the most hardiest LPS. Maybe amphipods or something are bother them. Mines retracts only when my Thor amboinensis rest over them

That funny you mention that. My tank is breeding amphipods. I have a scooter dragonette and a Mandarin on that now, however I do rarely see those pods on the sand. Normally they are all over the rocks and that it. Also for a few days my emerald crab would pay a visit to pick off this yellow stuff that was accumulating at the base. Nothing major, I hope, and I have not seen the emerald crab on it lately nor have i seen anymore yellow stuff. Could be emerald is getting it and out before I get up and see. Although I have seen my emerald crab on this same Duncan coral before this crash, and it was never spooked in like this. I am hoping that it is just adjusting after being disrupted so badly. I just don't know what to watch for if something is going south. Can LPS/SPS or any other soft coral get disease from being stressed?

Ol' Dunc is still in with all color still visible, however his mouth has been open more lately and his tentacles look as if they want to come out at times, but always retract back in.

Probably growing new heads. They do retract when growing

mine liked dirtier water... went from 3 heads to 15 in 8 months ... it also liked good alternating current

Did you try to feed it?. I start off with a little bit of cyclops with the fans on, then spot feed with brine shrimp, fans off, when the polyps start to show. This works most of the time to coax a duncan, sun coral, or dendro back to life. After a few days of this it should be on its way back to being healthy.

I have tried feeding over the past couple week periodically. Are you suggesting trying to feed daily until I see signs. I also have a pic I took this morning. This is the most I have seen ol' dunc in almost three weeks now.

I bought a similar sized duncan from a LFS that was obviously ignored and starved. It still had all the flesh around the skeleton but it still took about a month and a half or so for it to fully extended its tenticals.
