Alright, for gralstars' information...this thread was not meant to be a 'fake' thread....or a hey look rub in the face..look what I got for $50. thread...
This was my REAL experience. I honestly had no idea what this coral was...and in fact...I really...and ignorantly thought I was buying some really funky Protopalythoa...
The initial thread is posted in the zooanthus forms looking for an ID...they told me what it was..congratulated me..and pointed me here...
I'm glad I'm still considered a kid at 32 guys..
Anyway..the LFS is in CT. They do deal with a good amount of salt water and corals. They have a nice propagation room in the back with a few tubs and several higher dollar acans...
I didn't want to mention the name of the store because they are active in promoting CTARS..the Connecticut Area Reef Society...I'd still like to be able to shop there.
The day in question I was returning from the Cape and decided to stop in because its on the way back. I had only been to this store once before for a club meeting over a year prior.
I went through my purchases when I noticed this coral sitting by itself in front of the display tank. I asked the girl who was bagging my stuff up if she knew what it was..she had no idea..I asked if I could buy it...she said she really wasn't supposed to sell anything out of the display tank..
I told her it looked like a "frag" someone had sorta dropped in there...it wasn't part of the display....she also mentioned that the owner was away, and that I should probably check back.
I pushed the issue because this place is 45 minutes from me, and I told her since I didn't come in very often I really wanted to know..that was the only day I had to do my shopping..I asked if there was someone she could ask for a price...she went to find another guy in the store...this kid came over and kinda gave me the same talk about the display tank...he also thought it was a palythoa...I told him my little story...then he said alright if you want it I'd have to charge $50. for it.
In fact it took me another 10 minutes to decide whether or not to buy it. I had already gone over my budget for the day...:rolleye1: ...and I needed to be really justified in spending an extra $50. I said to myself..what does this 'smug' kid know that I don't..he'll get me for $50. of god I must be buying the blue/green version of yellow polyps! I even said to myself...John...you said no more green stuff in your tank...you always have plenty of green!
I looked at it several more times and walked around a bit...I knew it was rare...gorgeous...hmmm...should I even be buying something for my tank that I don't really know what it is..or its care needs...
I finally looked over at the girl and said...yea..I'll take that too.
The bottom line is this...I'm not too concerned with what they are worth...I will admit that is neat..and I have told some family members about my find.....I enjoy having this unique coral in my tank.
Donovan...very nice...they look identical to mine except I think the slight difference in coloration is your lighting..
Did you notice how neat they look right before they extend,,almost a dusky blue rim around the shoots...
Oh and I had my lights on a little too long tonight so they were retracted a bit...I got to count the polyps better....up to 13 now...babies forming...looks like it's starting to migrate onto the adjoining rock...
Thanks for all the input guys. This has been a real treat for me. I've gone through alot with my tank because I had a major collapse due to an outbreak of caulerpa racemosa- completely asexual in my tank...
I try to be an honest and thoughtful reefer...if anyone is interested...they can read about my escapades here...
