Duncans

The ones my lfs has r ultra green and the heads are a decents size. what would be a good price for ones with really good color?. I'm sure they have them marked up much more than they should be.

I have 3 small duncan colonies, 2 up high (within 8" of surface) and the other about 20" down. All colonies open up and do fine, I find the growth really happens when you feed a lot, mine don't seem to do better/ worse as to their height in the tank.
I did use Jen's blog as a fragging guide, however I found the heads were difficult to cut apart, I tried but 3 of the 4 haven't opened up- I hope I didn't kill them. :( Time will tell. So when you frag be certain they're big enough, I found a 6-8 headed colony wasn't developed enough to make good, clean cuts to separate 1 head from the other.

Value is in the eye of the beholder. If you think they're worth what the LFS is asking, then they're worth it. Small colony or not, they grow fast and they're hard to kill... so you should get your moneys worth out of them at some point. That's my perspective anyway.
I say everyone that has them should grow them, frag them, and sell/trade them at a decent price even if it means taking a small loss. Then the big dogs won't be able to overcharge for them anymore.

well i picked up a nice piece with 7 heads and an 8th starting to form. It was a little pricey, but has great green coloring, i think it was worht it. Only 3 heads have opened so far since i put it in my tank, but hopefully tomorrow they will all be open. what kind of foods do these guys like. The regular mysis and other small meaty stuff.

Yup, mysis, chopped up shrimp bits, etc. They seem to regurgitate all their food if you overfeed them, probably not healthy for them.

I stopped target feeding mine. I have alot of sps in my tank so i feed golden pearl. They puff up and close in when i feed the tank so i know they are catching plenty out of the wc.

I keep mine on the substrate under t5s in my 15 nano. They catch mysis when I feed all my suncorals and Dendros. Started with 2 heads and now have 5.

Thank you! I loved the striped face & it grows quickly.

As far as fragging, a fellow reefer from my local reef club (RobTop) says:
" If you cut just below the head, 1 poylp, it will skin over and regrow in 2-6 weeks depending on the tank. Just like cutting the cap off a mushroom.

If you cut a stalk(about 1"), and chop it into 3rds, you will have 3 heads in 2-6 weeks, even the pieces with out poylps will skin over and grow a new head.

If you take the 3 pcs from above and cut each in half you will have 6 head, but takes about 8 weeks for the 4 pcs that have no tenticales at all.

These corals are very interesting to frag, I am quite supprised out of everyting I have fragged how these will grow out of just about anything. As long as there is some skin around you are good."
