durso pipe question

im very curious about the durso standpipe system


ive never seen one in person and all i gave seen so far has been in pictures.

i dont understand how they work but i do understand that they are made to make the draining less loud.


i see many people who have set this up in a separate chamber inside of their tanks that has a lower level of water than the rest of the display tank...and i understand that its lower in che chamber because when it gets there it drains. but what i dont understand is how the durso standpipes surface skim if the opening is underwater.

ive also noticed that one standpipe sticks out in the air...not even touching the surface of the water...

can someone explain please?

To answer your questions about this setup.

The surface skimming happens when the water flows off the surface of the display tank and into the overflow box. The flow through the overflow box is sufficient to keep the organics mixed and sucked down the drain pipes. The tube facing up is a safety in case the primary drains get clogged the water will overflow this one instead of over the sides of the tank.

Well,in reality all 3 drains are durso's as they have the tell tale "T" with the cap and hole drilled.
Tswifty has a coast to coast overflow wall(I believe similar to a Calfo.......not sure).You can see that clearly in one of the pictures.
There is no need to do surface skimming as the overflow wall does that automatically.The drain to far left appears to be an emergency type drain.I would imagine that the op uses the ball valves to adjust the drain flow to closely match the return flow.
Very similar to a system earlier named"the herbie method".
This is just my take on the system.

i have a non drilled 75 gal tank i would like to move AND drill. the bottom is tempered so the best solution seems to be THIS setup unless someone has any better ideas oh how i should do this.

that is technically known as "The BeanAnimal Setup", it is made from a herbie setup but with one of the drains a full syphon, one a durso-style open channel and one emergency drain.

the primary drain is NOT a durso...it is a full syphon(no air introduced in the water pipe at all) the open channel durso style drain takes in the water the first drain cant handle and allows the system to self-adjust.
The emergency drain should never see water unless something catastrophic happens and both of the other drains clog.

how come you drilled each hole at its own height? i very much so like this setup where the overflow is at the top instead of corners

I had actually planned on it being all on the same horizontal plane, but the first hole got away from me (the lower one). It works out ok since the emergency drain has an upturned 90 and putting it in the lower one doesnt really adversely affect its operation. It just lowers the level at which the emergency drain kicks in.

yes, it is glass...I had them cut at the local glass company and siliconed the box together on the bench then installed it in one piece.

Teeth are un-necessary, the purpose of the calfo overflows are to get the most surface skimming that you can. If you put teeth into it, you arent skimming from the surface anymore, you are taking water from however far under the surface your teeth extend to. Bean explains it better in his thread.(and in the next two links)
