dwarf golden moray eels in my AP24?

dragonette

Yes, its LIVE rock.
Hey all,

I am looking up information/experiences on golden dwarf morays for my AP24. I have decided that if by Xmas I still want them, I will get a pair. So I have a few months to make up my mind.

Tank 17 mos. old
AP24 150wMH sunpod 14k
Quiet one 1200 back chamber- leads to spraybar
2 x koralia nano in the display

4" LS bed
Lots of LR .. dont know how much, its from my 44g tank so I just packed it full and sold the rest.

Current inhabitants.
Pompom crab
fire shrimp.
firefish
anemone crab
lots o hermies and snails.
a few brittle stars
4" LTA, bought him bleached, so hes hanging on the back/side of the tank, getting used to light again :)

Corals
lots o frogspawn
lots o torch
zoos/palys
shrooms/ assorted
duncan
xenia
candycane
blastos
suncoral
gorgonia
acan frag
hair algae frag (lol)

I found someone in hawaii (wet pets hawaii) she runs a ebay store with the specimens she has collected. I have seen much positive feedback from people who have purchased eels from her.

Any comments or suggestions would be helpful. Im hoping that a PAIR of dwarf golden morays would be happy at home in my tank!

waste/ nitrates and inverts

I don't know anything about the type of eel you are looking at, but I'd consider 2 things before putting it in a reef tank. First, you probably will be eliminating your ability to have inverts like crabs and shrimp. Second, when the eel eats you are going to have a bit of waste. My zebra eel is pushing 3 foot, and granted your eel probably won't start that big and take a while to get large, but it takes a bit of food to feed him and while I don't see his waste....... it must be quite a bit. I have him/ her in a fish only tank.

A pair would probably be pushing it. If you have excellent filtration and a sump for more water capacity, you might be able to do it. I know there was a person who keeps a chestnut and a dwarf (both very small eels. The chestnut doesn't get over 13-14") in a 20g with no problems that used to post here. Not sure if it was a reef, though. Otherwise, I'd advise only one eel in a 24g.

Aloha les, sorry i never purchased one of your eels but i got a great deal on a 55 gallon and decided to go ahead and just get something alot cheaper; a snowflake. Anyways back on topic, even putting one of those in such a small tank would be iffy and two would just be wrong. I wouldn't recommended anything smaller then a 30 gallon for atleast one of them.

I can tell you from personal experience that Les has EXCELLENT quality fish. Never got an ell from him, but lots of other things. Where else can you get a nickel sized potter's angel that eats right away. Still doing awesome, along with all the others.

Wouldn't hesitate a second ordering more things.

I will second LargeAngel on the quality of Les's fish.... I also got a nickel potter from Les and it is doing GREAT

these eels only get like 10 inches and the width of a pen or so.. all the info I have read from owners is that their eels dont go near the inverts. the inverts are too big.

waste- always a factor but this is a SMALL animal

This eel does not get large, it is a dwarf golden moray hence the reason I am considering it. Please look up this animal to obtain more information about its specifics. it does not apply to many points that you have stated.

Thank you to all that have replied. I think one eel is probably going to be a good start. Two might be pushing it, I agree. Any other information anyone has or comments about this species (not just any eel, obviously!) please post!

Les, sorry for calling you a 'she'. I actually know a gent by the name of Les too.. but 'she' just came to the mind automatically. Please forgive the assumption :( Im continuing to research this animal and will keep in touch if anything comes up I cant find the answer to.

thanks guys
Jess

no offense taken and if anyone ever questions putting more than one GOlden dwarf eel in a tank....the answer is yes you can..you gotta keep them around the same size though...1,2,3,5,9 no problem they can co exist in the same tank....as long as you keep them sorted by size.... hope this helps...aloha Les
