Dwarf Red Tip Hermit Crab Died

One of my small Hermit crabs died. He was found a few inches from his shell. My parameters are near perfect so I have no clue why he died. Possibly needed a bigger shell? Any suggestions?
(No other related deaths in over a year)

I would think it was because it needed a new shell. I had a few die off before like this and since havent seen any die since I added a variety of different size shells

It could have been this ,or could-be something else ....If we're guessing ...It could have choked on something , Maybe a heart attack ?
Could-be anything really .

Yea that has to be the cause. I will ask my LFS to some different sized shells to lower future loss. I didn't know I needed them. Thanks for your help @JonezNReef!

Just get some snails larger then the crabs.. It it quite fun to watch a Crab evict a snail , OHH and get a free meal.. It helps keep my snail population in check.

That Would-be like you dying because you live in apartment instead of a house . I highly doubt his shell was too small and it killed him .

Oh then idk how he died.

No one will even know.. Its useless to continue this discussion really.. You will never know for sure.. never.. so its all 100% assumptions/guesses..
We don't have any way of knowing its age or anything else really..
It died.. accept it.. move on..

That was my only point. When a crab dies in your system you will never find out why it died unless it is painfully obvious . And people that say they have a definite answer (in this hobby)are usually the people I don't listen to .

UPDATE: It was a molt. I searched my tank and counted all of them. 8 total. 8 found. My sand was previously used by a friend so 2 and 2 together confused me. Thanks, all of you for the help though :)
